Engine remapping

Has anyone had a good result from remapping a 3litre? And has anyone used http://customtuning.co.uk/
They suggest a 20bhp increase in power for the 3litre (2003) is this a good result for this type of tune?

Hmm im in Halifax which is only 10 miles from Bradford so i would be interested in this company! will kepp my eye on this thread!

I contacted a local Viezu remapping agent a while back on behalf of a mate who had an early E60 530i - they suggested a 21 bhp increase.... he did have it done and said that the car seemed a lot quicker than before... I think that it is the same [231bhp] engine as in the 2003 Z4

There is a chap on the forum who has had his car remapped and he said it like the car is on sport mode all the time , and when you press sport button it was like another sport again... if that makes sense

A few folk have reported 20bhp gains from remap. I am too sceptical

The other thing to maybe consider is, say you do get a 8% increase in hp, it may come at a cost of 20% drop in fuel efficiency. It may not matter to you, but it does for some. You pay for fuel all the time, yet you only appreciate the extra power once in a while.

Good point on the fuel, another question to ask!
Has any one had a remap and noticed a significant drop in mpg?

I don't believe you!!!

You mean the claims of upto 20bhp increase, an increase in fuel economy, better driveability, immunity from the traffic police and more sex are not true - or that they're all true, but you can only have one of them at a time :P

NA engines dont respond as well to mapping as forced induction, but there are still gains to be made. Depends whether its worth the £350.

Have you had any mods on your car? A map could help reep the benefits from them.

Did anyone watch the wheeler dealers with the Impreza? He put a sports air filter and a new exhaust system on the car. First trip on the dyno the car was struggling to reach stock HP (about 12hp less) the guy said its the OEM map getting confused and over compensating so the engine was struggling. He remapped the car and gained 40hp from stock and about 60hp from how it was. Like I said FI cars will see better results so NA cars should see about 30-50% of those gains so maybe 15-25hp with mods.

Correct me if im wrong tho!

A lot of people on here who mod their cars with induction kits like the Group M and better exhaust systems dont see huge gains. Interesting to see what a specialist would say. But I wouldn't take it to a willy nilly place I would go specialist. Someone on here will point you in the right direction

On the last Scottish meet, craig3.0 made a very convincing argument for remapping. Near 30bhp gain on the dyno. If he reads this thread would be good to get a view from him on fuel consumption.

I would be tempted to go for it for 20bhp if that was achievable. Fuel consumption isnt too much of an issue for me, as I'm barely doing 100 miles a week now, most of which is self indulgent hooning

I've read a couple of posts on here about remapping with members varying opinions but I can't recall anyone posting who has actually had it done. :?

I've never seen one where the 'before' figure has matched the official figure, so the tuned version ends up 'gaining' 20bhp, but you only get 5bhp above standard.

It always makes me suspicious that either all of these engines are down on power from the factory, or that tuners are claiming they are lower so that they can advertise bigger gains.

You also get some owners who say their car 'feels' faster, without any dyno proof at all :?

I'm not saying there aren't gains to be had, but I'm not sure I'd want to pay £400 for an unwarranted modification that may only give you 5bhp peak increase and smooth out some of the power delivery (which might actually make it 'feel' less powerful).

You'll also find that most of these remaps are NOT live mapping, they simply buy a map from a develop (or develop it themselves), put your car on the dyno to make sure there's nothing wrong with the stock mapping/fuelling, apply the new map to your car, and then make sure there's nothing unusual going on. The excuse for not live mapping it is usually that the cars are almost identical, so it's not worth the effort/cost to do individual ones - but that's the USP of a live map, that you get a map that's unique to the idiosyncrasies of your specific car - as the engine of a car that's only done 10,000 miles of 50mph max driving may well behave differently to one that's done 100,000 miles and is a regular redline visitor.

From what i hear , its a waste of time remapping a non turbo car! Had my 335d remapped & spoke with the gent that done it & he told me not to waste my money on remapping the zed ! Speaks for it's self me thinks !

I think a generic map on some straight OEM cars may be of some benefit, but the Zed's not one of them. Indications are there is little gain to be found. Now if you were to put in higher flow intake and exhaust, a remap would likely be beneficial, but as you are no longer OEM, a generic map could actually make things worse. You would certainly need a live custom map for your custom system.

All the talk is about BHP but for real feel its important to increase torque, or shift the torque to be more usable, hence making day to day driving better. The 3.0 Z4 isn't fast, and doesn't feel fast (compared to my bike) but I think that is due to it being so smooth and linear in its power delivery. Not sure if the costs are similar, but rather than remap I would change the diff gearing ratio, loose some off the top end for more real world fun.

What makes me very skeptical is surely if it was so easy to get these gains BMW would have done it already. They may get you gains but there must be some trade off that BMW thought wasnt worth it.

I can understand more if you have made modifications to your car but not a totally stock car.

I have friends who have had cars remapped with very impressive results but none of their engines were standard.

If it has a turbo there is gains to be had, I got my 335d remapped to 350 bhp & 700nm & now cars mpg is better.
