Engine Rattle when Accelerating

Hey guys,

I have an '04 Z4 3.0, but when i accelerate, i can hear a small rattling/ticking noise, from what i believe to be in the engine bay. I just wondered if anyone had any tips on what this might be?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Cheers

Neil

Is it just from low RPMs? 900-1.5k? Mines doing it as-well.. seems to be coming from the intake manifold area, near the DISA.. can't for the life in me figure out what it is. Really frustrating.

Probably the disa itself there is a how to on here to remove and clean it. Would be a good place to start I think. Worth checking heat shields etc also from past experience.

If it happens under 'load' i.e. when putting your foot down in a higher gear or up hill at lower revs, and sounds like a light 'tinkling' sort of rattle it could be mild 'pinking' or pre-ignition. It's not a huge issue if it's occasional and can be improved with higher RON super unleaded fuel. But if it's bad it needs checking on a diagnostic. Excessive pinking can lead to overheating and burn damage to pistons and valves.

I have the same problem, ive unplugged the DISA and it dosnt change anything, thought it was the alternator so i took the belt off ran the engine still the same........so if you find out whats causing this anoying noise please let us know

I use to get a rattling noise in my previous Z a 2.5 SE only under load especially when caning it, but my noise came from one of the exhaust baffles, so you think it could be exhaust related?

I'm actually thinking it is not in the engine bay now. It isn't a constant rattle and only seems to be when accelerating hard or in a higher gear in lower revs, which leads me to believe it is just a rattle somewhere.

Woahh... Ive used my Zed for the first time since the sunny weather, and sure enough has this very ticking!

It sounds like 1 tick per engine revolution, quite pronounced. Only did it at low rpm, high throttle and disappeared when I took the revs above 3000 (or it just got a bit warm). Mine also did it at idle if I blipped the throttle.

Does sound like a stuck lifter or DISA but will need a second opinion when i next do a cold start... How crazy all this happens at the same time!

EDIT: Could also be a leaking exhaust manifold actually, mine sounds a lot like that!

I started to think this was the DISA again, so i took it out at the weekend. Although it didn't look very dirty at all, i cleaned off what was there. It also didn't have much play whatsoever, and the pin wasn't loose either. However, when you turn the flap, the sound it made was a bit of a sucky noise, and the rod that you can see going in and out of the end bit, didn't flow smoothly, in fact it jerked a little when it came out.

My question is, is it done because it is not that smooth and produces that sound?? Or is it possibly to squirt anything into the end bit to clean that out, as the rest of seems to be in good condition??

Cheers

Mine was making a similar noise - turned out to be:-
