engine rattiling like chuff....

ive thought my engine has sounded rattly, not rough just a bit rattly. tbh ive been blaming myself and thinking i drive it too hard. i do like to use the revs but not all the time and tend to change up maybe to early. sort of 1, 2, 4, 6.

anyway. i was having a look for my weird oily/plasticy burning smell to see if i could figure out where it was coming from (i know its likely to be the rocker cover gasket) and sort of seeing where the vanos stuff is and the rattle was really bad.

it was coming mostly from the inlet area the plastic bit. (3.0i) it was not from the cam area. you can clearly hear the difference as you put your ear to each bit. esp using the old wives tale screwdriver method.

i know how noisy injectors can be, i have some big-sod-off ones on the westy but this wasnt a nice clicky sound much rougher. it was very intime with the revs.

i was thinking this might be the DISA valve.

im happy to give this over to a garage if its going to be an arse but i would like to know what it might be rather than saying figure it out as that's just asking for a big bill.
 
I checked my disa after reading on here some of the problems. Sure enough it was not right. So I bought the i6auto refurb kit. I found it easy to do. Only 2 bolts to remove the disa plus electrical connector. Plus you have to remove a hose for access. The kit has all the instructions. Now quiet as a mouse..The old one had worn out the cam so the flap was rattling about. The fixing bolt was ok so no danger of that going in the air intake as some have said. But the kit comes with a new bolt which fits from the outside. So no chance of it ending up in the engine.
 
thanks, i saw this when looking at them for the vanos jobbies. for 100 smakeronies i might as well do both. at the same time.

even if neither are particularly worn at 75K it seems like a good preventative measure. the sound is deffo coming from the disa region but i dont get any other symptoms. although it was idling a bit rough he other day after first start up till moved off.
