Engine problem...

Hi everyone,

Just drove home from work with a slightly worrying development with the engine. I have an 04 z4 3.0i for 14 months, and the engine has not skipped a beat, until now.

I seem to have reduced power under acceleration in all gears, and engine sounds very rattly! Could this be a vanos problem that i have read about on the forum but not really understood? The engine has maybe been a bit noisey on idle for a few months, but (stupidly) did nothing about it... 90k on clock and 5k till next service. No engine managment light on.

Any ideas what it could be, how much it will cost me, and if i should not drive anymore and try to get it towed to a garage?

Any ideas/comments would be appreciated!

Rattle noise and loss of power are symptoms of Vanos failure. Does it rattle whilst ticking over? Does it struggle to start?

Cant hear rattle from inside, but certainly when the bonnet is popped. No starting issues (yet). Doesnt sound like a nice 6 cylinder now :(

I would take to your local indi garage for an opinion. There is a good guide from shipkiller on here about how to repair vanos seals - you might want to check it out if you're a decent DIY mechanic. However I would get a professional opinion first

DISA? Very easy to check, see here,

Sounds like it could be this disa thingy, will get up early tomorrow and pull it apart! Thanks for all your comments! Ill let you know what i find.

If you can change a wheel you can remove and check the DISA, that easy

15 mins tops.

Tip, remove the airbox lid, MAF and middle hose as one, just unplug the MAF connector. This gives max access to the lower DISA bolt.

So had a nice early start at 0630 with a head torch this am. Removed the DISA yoke in about 10 mins, thanks for the tips Lance! Little bit dirty, but the unit appeared to be working, but cleaned it up and refitted it. Quick drive and the problem has dissapeared! Will head out for more of a blast tonight to fully test, but it is looking hopeful. :driving:

Thanks to all who replied with advice, much appreciated!

Stu.
