Hi
I ha e had a quick look at the forum posts but could not find a definitive answer to my question.

I have. 3.0 2003 zed with 70,000 miles on the clock, how much engine oil should I expect to use, ? The main reason reason for asking the question is that it seems to use more than my previous 53 plate auto Zed

Also what oil is recommended/ do you use, I have been using Castro’s Edge 0W-30 to top up. Bearing in mind that most of the cars mileage will be done in Portugal, a tad warmer than the UK lol, is this the correct oil to use

Also is there any problem with mixing oil eg if I topped up with 5W-30 on top of 0W-30 already in the engine.

I was told by the forum to use a decent 5w40 fully synthetic. If you use a different grade of oil ie 5w30 all you do is bring the oil down to the lowest grade. It won't hurt using 5w30 but 40 may mean it is less likely to burn oil when it is hot, especially in Portugal

At 70k miles your engine is just about run in :lol:

Not sure why you're topping up with 0w30? Is the car currently located in a v cold climate?

5w30 or 5w40 won't make any difference in portugal at 32deg all day than it will at 7deg in the uk. If your cooling system is working properly the motor should be sitting at the same relative temperature on long journeys.

As you are topping off with 30 viscous oil I would stick with that viscosity but go with 5w30 and not 0w30.

I personally use Castrol 5w30 longlife and do intermediate changes at around 7.5k miles. I usually suck out 7-7.5 litres and refill with 7 although spec is for 6.5l. Mine is also currently at 138k miles.

High oil consumption could also be symptomatic of a ccv system on its way out. Consider replacing it as a solution. Mine was supping oil and after i swapped in a new ccv system it barely needs topping up.
 
I only ever use Millers Nanodrive. That's all that's ever went in the 3.0si since I got it 5 years ago on Friday.

Never need to top it up but do change it every year.

There are two versions, which one do you use?
1: Millers Oils NANODRIVE EE LongLife C3 5w-30 Full Synthetic Engine Oil
2: Millers Oils NANODRIVE EE LongLife 5w-30 Full Synthetic Engine Oil

I like the Spec on the second one.
Benefits:
A reduction in friction of up to 62.5% providing a reduction in wear of up to 46% compared to other 5w30 grades meeting VW 504 00, 507 00
The coefficient of friction reduces rapidly as the engine temperature rises, maximising fuel economy and reducing emissions accordingly
Protects against wear, extending engine component life
Overall running costs are reduced through lower fuel consumption and longer component life

Sorry it's the 2nd one.... Millers Oils NANODRIVE EE LongLife 5w-30 Full Synthetic Engine Oil. Car runs great with it.
 
I used Valvoline Vr1 in the Stag, it had a high ZDDP content. What is your opinion on the Red Line 3w 30? Which also has a high ZDDP content. I believe it has a 'clinging' effect on the components.

Absolutely no idea.

Read reviews of Millers Nanodrive when the car was about to be serviced the first time and have stuck with it as the reviews were good and it never uses any oil like some Z4's.

Figured there was no need to change to a different oil if this one is working the way it should.

I like the spec and just read the reviews. It will be the oil of my choice when I do the first service ever service since owning the Z. It was serviced with Bmw's own oil by the PO.
Also the statement ' A reduction in friction of up to 62.5% providing a reduction in wear of up to 46% compared to other 5w30 ' is impressive.

It's also in a mates Z4 but he runs to a different servicing schedule than me. And is more towards the servicing the car tells him.

He's not went through any oil either though.

Perhaps we've just been lucky with these cars.

His was noticeably better all round after we rescued it from the neglect it had suffered.
 
I use Millers Nanodrive in the Z and the 911, excellent stuff. The VW will be going on it too once I have used up the VW supplied stuff. MX runs on old school semi-synth as it's an old engine and a little tired. All have 6,000 miles changes though or yearly if not achieved the mileage.

Hi,
I’m booked in for an Ins2 and looking at oils. 3.0Si on approx 51k.
Been looking at the Millers website; upon entering my reg I get the following recommendations.
Don’t really use it over the winter. If anyone could give me a steer, be really appreciated!

The grade specified by BMW would be 5W-30 so there is no reason to use anything else unless you are seeing high oil consumption. I would go for the a fully synthetic by either Millers or Fuchs. Opie Oils is a great place to buy from.
