Engine Oil, what do you think of this stuff?

Hello chaps.
Looking for some oil to top up my 2.5si between oil changes, as it burns about 1 litre every 1K. I found this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BFWNV4Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it looks like good value.

Anybody used this and got any thoughts or concerns?

It doesn't claim to meet BMW LL04, so however good it might be I wouldn't put it in my Z4.

There is a Castrol Edge one that does meet LL04 - which is what I use for top-ups on mine (even if my Indy uses Shell for oil changes).
 
Have a check if you have a Volkswagen TPS store nearby, it's their parts stores effectively. The Quantum 5w40 oil they sell is just a rebottled Fuchs Titan GT1, a very good quality oil. It's also cheap, cheaper than the oil you've linked to. Meets the LL04 specs too, this is even on the Quantum label and their website for confirmation.

Last time I was there they did an offer on 4 bottles, so I now have 20l of the stuff sitting in my garage for not much more (maybe even less!) than 7l of Castrol would have cost
 
I use the oil from TPS too, works out at around £16 per 5l when you buy 20l. However, if you are not in the trade you can no longer use TPS, VAG changed this late last year. I'm lucky as I know someone who works there. :D
I wouldn't waste money on overpriced oil, they have to meet the same specs. Mineral oil is mineral oil, the only difference is going to be what additives are combined with the base oil.
 
lets not forget you dont need llo4 unless you are really going to run your zed for 10,000 miles before changing.. and for many thats 2-3 years on the same oil.. i dont think so. by all means get good oil.. but lets not pretend we are keeping it in for more that 5k before changing it - ergo no point in paying money for something you dont need. for the record i like fuch.
 
I'm with Road Warrior - long life oil doesn't belong in these cars imho. Keep that for your rep-mobiles. A good quality base stock synthetic and change every year / 6000 miles. Try Millers or Fuchs for good base stock.
 
Regarding the above posts, yes LL04 is designed for long life, but it also gets run through tests specific to BMW to get the accreditation. I don't know, I'd rather have an oil that has met all the specific engineering requirements laid out by the engine manufacturer.

And cost? It doesn't have to cost any more. As I said I use VW Quantum 5w40, it is identical (seriously, check the product data sheets) to Fuchs Titan GT1, as Fuchs are the official supplier. It also meets LL04 spec, and it's cheap. I paid £54 for 20l, that's £13.50 per bottle. Granted I hadn't heard it wasn't available anymore, although they've never officially sold to the public... You just call up and order it to a cash on collection account, at least that's how my local worked. They also had signs saying trade only, so there you go, certainly worth a phone call!

For the record I change mine annually, and I tend to do about 7k a year on average. Again, just because the bottle describes it as long life doesn't stop you changing it earlier than the intervals.
 
I agree with mjennings, I recently changed the oil( and viscosity) on my 2.5si. It had Castrol edge titanium 0w-30 from the factory but I went for millers xf 5w-40.

I changed as I’m getting on for 50k. Your oil consumption sounds like it’s in tolerance but with thicker oil you might find it lowers.
 
TBH if you burn 1L every 1k miles in an n52, I'd either look for a leak or other cause of the oil burning, or try a slighly heavier weight (like 10w40).
The standard of oil is not going to fix that imho. For a m54b30 1L every 1k miles is still considered acceptable, but on a N52b25 not imho.

OP that’s not normal, my N52B30 didn’t lose a single drop in 10,000 miles of ownership.

If your engine is losing 1 litre of oil every 1,000 miles you either have leak or it is burning oil.

An oil leak should be an easy fix, however burning oil usually indicates a head gasket issue...only way to find out is to do a compression test.

I do love scaremongering that seems to happen here. Just because your engines done use a bit of oil doesn't mean it's a fault. Here's an extract from an official BMW TSB:

For BMW spark-ignition and diesel engines, the maximum permissible engine oil consumption is 0.7 l/1000
km.

Because of their increased power output and torque, M engines have a maximum permissible oil
consumption of 1.5 l/1000km.

So that's 1 litre every 893 miles being within parameters, if you do the conversions.

And that's pretty much what it burns! Its used daily and has over 100K on the clock. It's just flown through the MOT without issue and the indie that services it said that it's in excellent condition for its age.

I did buy the Repsol oil. For 5L, I could not find anything cheaper that I would trust and it will last me about 8 months. My mechanic has his own views on the various oils and feels for a mid-range motor like mine, there's little point spending a fortune on "Snake Oil!" He uses the BMW rated oil for oil changes and for top ups thinks any fully synthetic of the correct viscosity and low ash etc. will be fine.
 
So looking to do my first oil change on my 3.0 E86 since getting the car in Feb.

Its on 81k, so would it be OK to use the Quantum 5w40 or should I be using a different grade oil based on the mileage, and am I correct that it requires 6.5 litres when changing.

I already use Quantum 10w40 on my VW Corrado and purchase it from this place.
