Can I use shell 10w 40 helix h7 synthetic oil in my bmw z4 2.2 petrol please? I have 10 litres that I havent used and if it wont cause any problems I would use it rather than buy other brands, at the same time Im not looking to scrimp.
 
I just checked the specifications of the oil and it doesn't specifically mention that it meets BMW oil requirements.

Maybe someone here will come along and say I'm wrong (hopefully for your sake), but I'm going to say you're better off finding better suited oil. I personally use Castrol Edge
 
Ive got my fingers crossed as having the oil already.What castrol edge spec oil is it out of interest please Dr Zed?
 
Rather than take any chances Ive seen that Eurocarparts have valentines discount (yes really) on engine oil which buys TRIPLE QX Fully Syn Engine Oil 5W-40 A3/B4 - 5Ltr for £20.07 so if I buy the 7 litres needed then I will get free postage aswell £31.05 total cost which after shopping around is pretty reasonable.

I bought some Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 for my 3 Series that was LL04 compliant.

Prior to that I used Castrol Edge Titanium that was also to BMW LL04 spec.

I only swapped because 3 or 4 years ago my BMW Indy told me BMW had changed from Castrol to Shell.

The 2.2L engine doesn't require anything special like the s54/3.2L does, 10w40 will be fine, fresh oil is what's important. I have never used Helix before but they have a good reputation.

Throw your reg into eurocarparts or halfords and then find the oil that way (then shop around for the cheapest place for it).
You'll need LL 01 or 04 spec oil for our engines. Some will say it doesn't matter (and it may very well not), but if bmw have stated that spec then I tend to follow it.
 
The general truism is to change your oil and filter often…5k miles or annually is a good target.

The LL specs as their name implies is all about very long drain intervals in both time and mileage.

If you commit to change oil often then for your engine technology almost any 5-30, 10-40 type semi synthetic oil could be used.

If the car is new to you could use some of your old stockpile with a new filter and then change the oil before the summer.

Just a view…

Personally I spend big money on ester based oils and change my oil n filters annually…but people do say I’m pedantic…
 
I think the 12 monthly/5000 mile oil change will suit me perfectly as I wont do much more miles than this and I guess weighing the cost over a year for oil is reasonable anyway. Not sure what I will do with the other oil...paint the fences maybe :lol: :lol: :lol:
