Engine oil choice

In the past for previous cars i've had before my Z4MR I wouldn't have been too concerned about Engine oil brands. 'For a given spec all brands are the same', I used to say. But not for my Zeddie - oh no! Well..... may be... 'perhaps'.

I am looking at Mobil Engine Oil (10W-60 - 5ltr) and the usual Castrol Oil (10W-60 - 4ltr). Virtually the same price at Eurocarparts after the customary discount code. We all know 4L won't stretch, so i will need to buy an additional 1L.

What is everyone's experience with the Mobil Engine Oil 10W-60 over the Castrol equivalent? Will the engine use ( burn ) more of the Mobil? Will both oil brands perform the same?

Thank you kindly for your advice.

4 + 1 won't do the job , you need 6 litres.
As for brand ? We all have out favourites & has to be the Millers CFS 10w60 for me

[ref]mr wilks[/ref], do you use an oil pump to the dipstick or do you get umder the car? I use the former and normally get exactly 5L out, no more...

Hi Andy

What oil would you recommend for my 35is. Ready to bring it out of hibernation now the weather has taken a turn for the better. Not meaning to hijack the thread.

Indy does it but always given 6litres or 2x5 litre then taken the surplus home . Always assumed it was a 6litre change

I had two oil changes on my 35i, both times it was Millers 5w30 Trident ( fully synth not semi)
Just £26.50 on ebay at moment for 6litres delivered to your door

I use Fuchs Titan race pro s, as I think Ester based oils are better. But any oil from the likes of shell, Mobil 1, Castrol etc will be fine. Check opie oils out for more info
Also you will need 6 litres for a full change not pumping via dipstick.

[ref]mr wilks[/ref], unfortunately the S54 engine requires 10w60, which is considerably more expensive :headbang:

Worth it though :wink
£100 for the engine, diff & gearbox oil delivered from Opie or £65/£70 engine oil alone on ebay.

If that's the case I wouldn't be using that method. I use the traditional sump drain technique (under the car as you say) and I get closer to 5.5L.

[ref]Mangozac[/ref], do you use a lift or any other method to lift the car horizontally? otherwise I risk not being able 2 get all the oil out

patience is the clue, go for a short run and warm up the engine, put the car on axle stands, open the drain plug and let it drain for an hour,
and be careful removing the plug cus it well now be hot of course. if it proves too hot let it fall into the drain tray and retrieve it later.

^^ Definitely this, the engine must be warm (not necessarily full operating temp but I'd suggest at least to the first mark on the gauge). I'm pretty sure the BMW instructions state this.

When the engine is warm all the oil is out in 10 minutes, it really doesn't take long to drain. I am fortunate enough to have a lift, but when I didn't I would lower the car back onto the ground while it's draining - as you suggest it is ideal to have the car level.

My suggestion for the oil itself: I'm in the Castrol Edge Supercar 10W60 camp. This is the replacement for the TWS which was originally developed specifically for the S54 engine.

I use LiquiMoly Race Tech 10W-60, about half the cost of TWS here in the states, and readily available with free shipping from Amazon. It doesn't carry the specific BMW recommendation for the S54 but per LM, it meets the requirements and is quite popular.
