Engine noise

I recently purchased an e89 2.0i 2012, it has a ticking noise between 1000-3000 rpm but only on accelaration if you hold the revs steady it's not there, the dealers had it for two days and they say it's a caractaristic of the engine , am I being fobbed off?? :headbang:they said they had done a comparison test against another and it was the same but couldn't show me the test car !!! Any ideas

Direct injection on N20 engines is a loud diesel like ticking. Normal... If somewhat undesirable. Welcome to the world of 'efficiency' over refinement.

Oh and by the way... Welcome.. Introduce yourself in the newbies section if you haven't already.

Yip! Unfortunately that sounds about right. Tim described his 2.0l engine as sounding 'like a bag of spanners'.

Others disagree but sometimes I do wonder if it's just how people hear or not hear some noises.

I have booked the car in at stratstone Leeds they can hear the noise so let's see what the outcome is , I will post the results :driving:

As Angie mentioned. can only go by my personal experience and unsure if all N20 engines are the same but yes I found the one I had quite rattly at cold start but also had a thudding type noise that you could hear in the cabin which was definately mechanical. I had the extra problem of a loud whine when the engine was cold almost like a dry bearing sound which slowly went but not entirely once warmed up, dealer looked at it twice twice but couldn't find anything. It was a real shame as I probably would have hung onto the Zed for longer than I did.

Tim.

Quick update for those who have an interest, went to Bmw on Thursday this week and they are going to replace the down pipe and cat , not convinced but time will tell when it's fit ,unfortunately while it was there , they damaged the passenger seat , I think it was tfr or acid wheel cleaner. This was compounded by them been instructed not to wash or valet the car ,, not happy,,appointment with the dealer principle early next week :headbang:

Lord knows how a cat or downpipe could create a rev related ticking... As for the seat... 'Stealers' is all. I had similar with a steering wheel.
