Engine Noise?

Hi,

So, almost a week I've had my new car and loving it so far however, I'm worrying about sounds and noises (never owned a BMW before) so could be normal. I drive an auto and will drive my best to describe the sound.

Imagine you're approaching a round about on a very quiet bit of road, if I knock down to hear 2 or 1 and the RPM is in the 3k range then I hear what sounds like a mechanical / low jet engine type sound. It comes to a stop as I do and if I accelerate as normal it goes away, just really notice when the revs are slightly higher and I'm coasting to a stop in a high gear. Does this sound typical of normal engine operating sound?

Taken it to bmw garage ... Twice and they say they can't anything ... But I can. Maybe it's just the gears or engine working?

Thanks,

John

Not if the OP's car is the 30i (as his sig suggests) as its NA. Equally if turbos, you'd get more sound on acceleration than deceleration.

OP its really hard to know what the sound may be given the description. Could be the gearbox, engine belts, rear diff... anything really. Can you record it and post that up and we'll be better placed to advise. Personally if the garage can't hear it, you might just be worrying over nothing.

On a 30i......there aint one!!

There's a few on here with a metalised whirring noise when traveling at low speeds but that's on the 20i turbos.

Thanks for the replies, appreciate everyone's time.
And no, no turbo on mine (would be bad-ass if it did though, right?) :)

Well sound supposedly is normal on deceleration at low speeds as the transmission works away. Think I'm just a car hypochondriac lol.
