engine needs gas to turn over, please help costing me so much money

hi i have a z4 2004 3.0i convertible. my car does not turn over without gas and at times does not turn over at all until i try a couple times. i got the idle control valve changed as well as the air flow sensor, it wasnt those.

i read online it could be the ground wire on the resistor pack of the fuel tank.

my question is where is it exactly and how i can locate it, i hear its in the boot right hand side but cannot find it, please help and any advise please

iv read online that the resistor pack is located on the right hand side of the boot but cannot locate it, iv tried everything but its just costing so much. i need some advice as the garages i take it to dont seem to know and keep guess working which just keeps costing me.

I'm sure someone will respond if they know the answer. You need to be patient though as when you posted most of the forum would have been tucked up in bed. Now they are probably running around getting ready for work.

Some more information wouldn't go a miss either haha

When you say needs gas what do you mean? Foot on the pedal? (Please explain)

Has the car thrown up any error codes?

Have you scanned the car to see if it has stored anything?

Two questions to get the ball rolling:

Spark plugs when where they last changed?
Battery have you done a check on its condition.

Hi iv have done a diagnosis it had a code for air flow sensor which Iv changed it wasn't that, took it garage they said it was the idle control valve but it wasn't that.

Yes it needs foot on the pedal all the way down

and after a few seconds it sparks up the revs or a while until it comes to normal rev range and then it's fine.

I can hear the fuel pump prime so was thinking it might not be that.

I read online it could be the ground wire of the resistor pack for the fuel pump.

I'm totally confused as everytime I take it in to a garage it keeps costing me with no results.

Car just had a service with the best sparks etc. The battery seems to be working fine as it hasn't given any problems with electric what so ever.

When the car does turn if u put the break down it revs aswell until it comes to normal tgen it's fine. I thought it was the icv as when it turns it seems the Rev seems to struggle to hit a high rev range unless using gas but then soon as it's turn and the gas has been used to turn the car and bring the Rev up it automatically revs for a while until it slowly cokes down and sits on the correct rev range

I note you say car has just had a service. If problems started just after this then it is likely to be associated with something they buggered up during the service. Garage also doesnt seem very competent so I would be tempted to get someone else to look at car or complain to garage that they must have disturbed something during the service and they need to find out what it is.

No the problem started before the service. It's quite bad, first I thought it does it on a cold start. I read online that a manufacturer problem with the z4 e85 is a ground wire on the resistor pack of the fuel pump. I read that it's located in the boot on the right hand side. When I look at the boot I only find a battery under the board in the near bottom of the boot. I couldn't find the resistor pack. I'm not sure of this is the problem but many people have had similar problems and spent alot investigating and fixing uneessary Parts just like me. The car drives so well and when it's on and warmed up gives no problem. When starting the car first time u have to put the pedal to the metal and leave it there when turning the engine and in time it turns over, I'm stumped! I worry about going garage as they will guess work things as they have and il end up footing the bill.

If there's anyone that can help please message me I can even email a video of when it does it. Please let me know if you need further information

I didn't check the battery but I was guessing as all the electrics was working perfectly fine even when the engine is off it was fine, I'm not had any issues with anything which can relate to the battery, the car at 1 point was sitting for a few weeks and when I did go check on the car all electronic equipment worked as it should.

Does the ecu still give a code? What P code was it

It gave a code for the MAF. Is that solved or still there.

I suspect something like a vacuum leak.

As for the battery: what is the running voltage? (to rule out battery/alternator problems)

I'm not sure what the exact code was but yes it is all sorted, I'm guessing it's a vacuum leak aswwll it has all the symptoms but where do i start ? Iv had a look I took the air box off etc and couldn't spot anything

Let the engine idle (or run) and spray short dabs of brake cleaner on various parts. If the revs rise, there's your leak.
I'd start with the hoses near the maf, around the idle control valve, throttle body and the rubber plugs at the rear of the inlet manifold.

Next time write down the code. I can't stress how important that is, that is always your first lead. I suspect that if you leave the engine running rough, it will throw a code again. Without knowing the code, looking for vacuum leaks is a guess.
It could just as well be a sensor, or again the MAF. Did you use a (new) original part or aftermarket?

I don't suspect the coils, as a bad coil throws a code very fast.

Iv changed the maf and icv with original oem parts. It wasn't those, I wanted to find the problem before giving it to a garage as I can't afford the guesswork problem solving they do. The only other thing I can think of is the ground wire, anyone heard of it or has experience with it
