All,
Not sure if anyone else has experienced this but worth some preventative maintenance after my recent experience....
Driving the other day I heard the noise of something falling off my car and bouncing underneath. History of of my first couple of cars (long time ago) I know this this wasn't good. Following this when I went over a bump a firm knock noise(small band occurred). Assumption was that something on the suspension, maybe anti roll bar mounts or something had failed.
After some investigation of the obvious when I got home I couldn't see anything. Following morning called inie (TWG automotive in Camberley, recently having been hugely unimpressed with local main dealer out with local main dealer) and took the car there albeit very gingerly. Further symptom now of vibration.
Prognosis was that the engine was sitting on the subframe and steering rack rather than attached to the engine mounts due to the bolts failing/falling out. Downside was that two had sheared off in the block.
After some investigation is apprears that it's a "known" problem and the solution is replacement of the bolts with higher tensile ones. Unfortunately "known" doesn't seem to extend the BMW dealer that has serviced the car for the last four years and MOT'd it 3 weeks ago....
Suggest it you haven't had them checked or replaced it's worth doing before failure.
Here's another thread with the replacement bolt part numbers. http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=22166
