Engine Mount Bolts Failed

I'm sure everyone knows this by now, but just in case.... If you have a 2006-2008 Z4 M roadster or coupe, you must have the engine mount bolts replaced on the RIGHT side. The failure is caused by apparent overheating and the new bolts are supposedly resistant to this failure. Do no have them inspected or tightened, they need to be replaced.

I took my car in for inspection in April 2009 and I was told they were fine. Yesterday while driving, they failed. Snapped in half and the engine dropped about 3-4 inches. I had the car towed in today and the service advisor did not know about the TSB. Fortunately I printed the TSB and brought it with me. The chief mechanic vaguely recalled hearing something about this issue, but had never seen it happen. They claimed that Z4 M's are rare in this area so it isn't surprising they had not seen this problem.

A copy of the TSB can be found HERE. There is a link to the .pdf file. I would recommend having this done ASAP.

I snapped a quick pic with my iPhone. You can see how far the right side of the engine dropped.

I will take the sheet in on tuesday when I go to the dealer for the X5. No doubt they will claim they have never heard of it.

Thanks for that though, I thought it was 2006 models only but was obviously wrong.

I always find it worrying that you have to find TSBs yourself.

IMO they should pop up on the service computer as soon as the reg is entered, unless the work has been noted to have been completed.

Reading the TSB it seems to suggest this should only be looked at when a customer complains- i.e. when your engine is on the floor! :? This is not a compulsory recall requirement as far as I can see.

This is true, but I know of others who have insisted on the dealer replacing the bolts before they failed. I wish I had been more demanding.

just out of intrest is their any UK owners that have suffered this?? my dealer knows absolutly nowt abt this!

It's a shame they don't at least make it a voluntary recall. Most people afflicted with this issue had absolutely no symtoms prior to failure. I had mine replaced, but judging from dealership reliability I wonder how long before I suffer the same fate as rabman...

well mine goes in for its oil service next wednesday so ill be taking this service bulletin in with me!!! ill let you know what they say!!
