Engine Misfire

Driving home today my Zed ('07 3.0si) developed an engine misfire, this gradually got worse until it stalled (its an auto!) at some traffic lights and wouldn't restart. At the same time the "EML" and emissions (little engine symbol) lights came on.

After a few attempts it restarted and I managed to limp it to a BP petrol station where I refuelled (about 1/3 tank) with Ultimate high octane (£1.07 a litre!!!). This appeared to improve matters and its now back to normal - althought the emissions light refuses to go out.

So some questions...

i) Could it be dodgy fuel which caused this (prebviously refuelled at local supermarket days ago) or is there some other issue maybe?
ii) How do I get the warning light reset -is this a dealer only thing?

Any help massively appreciated!

Being that your car is brand new, I would just take it back to the dealer and have them look at it under warranty. Something is obviously wrong and they can hook it up to their diagnostics computer and it'll tell them exactly what the problem is.

To give a guess (somewhat educated :idunno: )

1) Yep, sounds like you got bad fuel, possible water contamination in it. The high octane fuel will help a lot to cure it up.
2) BMW systems normally have to start 3 times without encountering an error, and then it will clear its fault codes/lamps :D

Hope that helps and everything returns to normal

Cheers!
