Engine misbehaving - any suggestions?

Hi,

I have a 2006 3.0si with about 65,000km (about 40K miles) and over the last few days noticed the engine "missing" when I pulled through about 1500-1800RPM, especially with a passenger in the car. It only does this one it's warmed up, and not straight away.

I took it in for its service and mentioned this to the mechanic who also changed all the spark plugs and cleaned the O2 sensor. He tested the coils and said they were all within specification.

After the service and change of plugs it's running worse - idling "missing" every 3 - 5 seconds, and again with roughness through to about 1500RPM. Once I'm off and driving there seems to be no hesitation or "missing". I was told to drive it over the weekend and report back to him.

From my research it seems like the coils could require replacement but before I shell out for new coils I was looking for any advice from here.

Thanks!

Nelson.

Nelson,

Coils may well check out on a common resitance test but its often under load that they fail and sometimes within a specific rev range. Not sure how you mechanic tested the coils but a fault code should show up the issue if he/she uses the appropriate diagnostic equipment.

Thanks AlanJ, I will drop the car back and see what he says.

Cheers,

Nelson.

Small update - car has now had a couple of tanks of fuel through it to eliminate that angle.. Not much change, it is still idling a little rough and definitely misses more when I have someone else in the car with me..

Car is still throwing no codes which is a pain.. It is going in this week for 6 new coils.. Hopefully that sorts the problem.. If not they want to change one of the cam sensors.. See how it goes..

Cheers,

Nelson..

Have now had 6 coils changed and the car is back to her old self - quite surprised at the difference in power with the new plugs and coils.. It must have been a little down even before the misfire was happening..

Cheers,

Nelson.
