engine management light

hi there i've just had my exhaust emmission valve light come on on my dash and got it booked in for friday,
i asked bmw what it is and does but they don't seemed to want to tell me.

Does anybody know or have had this happen to them at all?
i have a 56 plate z4M

Happened to mine and it turned out to be a faultly lambda senson (oxygen sensor), quickly replaced and dealt with by BMW.

Guy I spoke to on another site said the Z4M's are prone to carbon build up on the sensors and they have found quite a few have needed replacing.

Hope its not more serious than that for you...

just got my car back and they have not fixed it due to no part,

jayd you was right it was an oxygen sensor just hope nothing else goes wrong
 
my lights just come on too but drives fine, assume it's the same thing ?

going to book it in for this week...

Yes mine has just come on... 66k miles... Does anybody know how much it costs to fix roughly from a local garage?? If it is the o2 sensor.

Why should Z4Ms be particularly prone to carbon build-up on the sensors? I can't see how this problem can be an inherent design fault specific to the Z4M. If the problem is one of carbon build-up then this would suggest that the most likely cause is too many cruising miles and not enough high revs where the exhaust system is allowed to get really hot. Regular Italian tune-ups will help prevent such problems also some Redex Petrol Treatment in your tank once in a while too.

Yep, that's really weird, I keep reading about these sensor probes but have never had an issue myself. As far as I know my car with just over 100k km is still running on the 2006 original ones fitted... She does see the redline whenever she's out though :driving:
 
I had to replace a pre cat sensor last year at aprox 25k miles, had it diagnosed at BMW for £50 :) They had to order the part in £200 :o
I changed it myself, had to remove a few bits to gain access to the sensor, was tricky as you really need a Lambda socket to make things easier. The car ran fine even though the warning light was on :? and is still peachy a year or so on :driving:
