Engine management light & inhibited revs.

Here & there
Car has been going fine and without a hitch. However today I happened to notice that the engine management light is on, don't know how long it has been illuminated as the position of the steering wheel has been blocking my view of it.

Pulled into a layby and out of gear into park, foot on throttle but it wouldn't rev past 3000 rpm first off, let it come back to tickover and floored it again same thing happened. On the third go it sailed past 3k and was as it should be but light remains on and sometimes it will stop at 3k and seems to be in safe mode other times away it goes as it should.

Anyone had anything similar ??

If you have idrive then 'Vehicle Information' will tell you what's wrong. If not then use the left stalk on the column to go to 'check control' for more information.

I wouldn't just rev it until it clears however...

My guess is injectors or hpfp. N54 is well known for them going pop.

Yeh been into idrive but systems all OK or so it says on Check Control, just says 'no faults' unless there's another way of finding fault codes I am not aware of ??

Car back from Wellsway, Bath and only fault that could be found was a fuel/air metering problem making car go into limp mode. The HPFP pressure was tested and injector lines tested and all OK. Interesting though that the technician came out and tested things and diagnosed HPFP but main dealer said pump is fine and didn't need replacing.

Weird how one tech. guy says pump but main dealer says pumps fine ?

I guess time will tell...

Probably right on a junction or at a roundabout !!

Should have kept my mouth shut..... low and behold Tuesday morning at a roundabout in the rush hour dddduuuuhhhhhhhhh and stop.

Turns out it is injectors and all six have been replaced on a car with only 23000 miles on the clock. I find myself asking why ??

BMW build with Land Rover quality and relaibility !!!

I was waiting for my car to be finished at the dealer. Sat next to the service desk. The service reception was telling a customer they had replaced all of the injectors on their car. Don't know what model it was. Seemed the car was less than 12 months old. He explained that they had fitted £800 pounds worth on warranty.
Talking to someone i know that runs his own small garage. He bought a cheap Rover 75. First trip out it misfired and limped home.
Having spent two days trying to fix he spoke to a friend that specializes in Rovers. Straight away he said injectors. Apparantly if one sticks open, the others run lean, misfires, probably detected as knock so eng. management drops into limp home mode.
So on the Zed if one goes probably hard to know which as failed, so just replace all of them. I think the o2 sensors run on two banks of three.
So the readout from obd port could probably wittle it down to three.
I'm sure some diyers on other BMW forums have probably found out a way of finding the faulty unit without having to replace all.

From what I've read in other forums, its possible to detect the actual one that's causing the issue. The issue itself appears not that an injector is in a particular state, but in fact it is something to do with recirculation gasses causing fouling in the injectors. Its a known issue with the N54 and a direct result of BMW trying to make their engines run cleaner. As its likely a faulty design, they'll replace them all to an updated design.

Am I glad that I took extended warranty !!

Six injectors at £144-00 a pop, four and a half hours labour @ £135-00 for testing, fitting, testing, adjusting, testing, tuning, testing, cup of tea, testing, replacement fuel etc.etc. Add in a hire car at £67-00 a day for three days and its starting to really hurt. You do the maths on this one as even with my socks off I don't have enough toes, wife does but she's not here just when I need her. Am i being brave or foolish I ask myself

All, hopefully should be well and no more popping and banging prior to coming to a standstill. All I will add is 'watch this space' as time will no doubt tell.
