Engine Management Light - Code Check

Afternoon Guys,
The engine management light came on on the way to work this mornign. The car spluttered to pick up any power. So i stopped by the side of the road, switched off the car off and then restarted and was running fine.

I spoke to Birds Indy specialist http://www.birdsauto.com/ about havin the diagnostic check completed as the car is still under warranty with a dealer i bought it from.
They charge £75. Is this the going rate for having diagnostic checks completed. Also are there any other Indy's in or around the North or West London areas who you could recommend??

Cheers in advance!

Is it BMW warranty you're referring to? I'd leave it and see if it happens again. If it does bring it into BMW (provided it is BMW warranty we're talking about) and they'll get it seen to. They only charge diagnostics if it is proven to be a non-warrantied item at fault or if nothing was found to be wrong and even then it is down to their discretion.

If it is a third party warranty just bring it to any local indie with an ODBII kit to read the faults.

Cheers playalistic, Unfortunately it's under 3rd party/car dealer warranty. So I'm going to try a local indie.
Funnily enough, my car had its last service at birds before i bought it (Service book stamp) . They mentioned it has/had a gruppe m air intake!
I'm itching to get out of the office and see if it's still there!!

I was going to say you'd know if it was but then I guess you wouldn't if you'd not driven a car without it

Fingers crossed you have it there but I'd imagine the previous owner would have removed it and flogged it separately! They're not cheap by any stretch :D

Try Stephen James BMW in Enfield, I have paid around £99 for diagnostics before (on an M3), not sure if that's for an hour and if they charge half that for a half hour diagnostic?

Speak to Del in Service, he's a good guy.

Playatastic, you're not gonna belive this but A quick search on here for "gruupe M for sale " has revealed the previous owner was on here (car description and timelines suggest it - username ///rage) .... and it was sold :( i would have recognised it if it was there, but i dont remember seeing one!

Car under warranty :)
Goes wrong..... :o

so your taking it to another garage and paying money to get it fixed. If I was the selling dealer I would certainly say that it would invalidate the warranty :?

D'oh! I was going to buy it at one point too. Wish I did as it would have saved me £400

well spotted!
I bought the car quite far from where i live. +100 miles so figured i might as well have it checked out (but not fixed) locally. but i will give the selling dealer a call.

Plus not sure if the problem still exists as the EML light doesn't stay on. Can anyone clarify: If there is an issue, would the EML light stay on whilst driving , or it just be illuminated for a few seconds on startup? :?

So ... they charge then.

I made a warranty claim from an independent trader on my M3, and he advised me to take the car to BMW for a diagnostic at my expense, which I did. Worth doing if the trader is an hour or two away from you (especially the way fuel is rising in cost nowadays :x )

From that point on BMW carried out a repair at the trader's request and he paid for it. Needed to get a little legal on him when he kept forgetting to pick up his phone, and then he toed the line nicely :P

OP: mention my name and silver grey M3 and Del (Derren) will know who I am.

cheers Markos, Here's hoping i dont have to go that far. Maybe i'm just being naive, first M car and all that!

so anyone know if the EML light is suposed to stay on?

Sometimes they will appear and disappear but the fault will always be logged in the system anyway. One thing to consider is your battery health. Sometimes these transient things are caused by a battery on its way out.

nice one, playalistic. I really do hope it is something like that. I'll have a better idea once i speak to the dealer today and see if i get home without the aid of a tow truck
thanks for you help all!

Odds on it's an O2 sensor.. £300 or so repair from a dealer for one bank.

It's a shame if it is the same car, can't remember rage's name again but he certainly didnt seem like he wanted rid.

Thanks for the heads up Andy, I gave the M a quick blast today and seemed to be behaving fine. This is what i see when i start the car. I'm pretty sure the Exhaust Emission and EML light aren't supposed to stay on when the key is in position 2... correct?

Any ideas guys? either way i'll be on the phone to the dealer tomorrow.

in key position 2

and in with th engine running

If the engine is rnning and the light stays on then it needs to get looked at. My exhaust emissions light came on last week so I have ordered the odb cable & software so I can read the code. I know it will probably be an O2 sensor so just need to find out which one and get a quote for it to be replaced.

All the lights did light up but those were the ones that stayed on. I spoke to teh dealer and her advised the same aswell. if the lights go out when the engine is on then you're ok.
@ Dogmatic, which OBD cable and software did you order? do have a link to it by any chance?
