Engine Management Light Came On :(

I was on my way to work this evening when there was a slight cough from the engine and then the engine management light came on. On my journey home earlier this morning the car didn't feel quite right, nothing major, still started, went, ticked over and stopped OK but you know that feeling you get when things aren't quite how they should be? It just felt a little down on power when accelerating.

Anyway, when I got to work I had a listen and couldn't hear any nasty noises but when I blipped the throttle hard there was a momentary pause, then a sound like something being sucked out of the way and then the engine revved up just fine (we're talking split seconds here, not a long delay). Pressing the throttle slowly showed no issues and the revs rose normally. I switched the engine off and back on and the symptom had gone. Any ideas?

I've just ordered a code reader to get a bit more info. The only changes to the engine in the 1800 miles I've put on it are a K&N filter and a new set of plugs. I've read the stories about oiled filters and MAF sensors - is this the type of symptom a gummed up MAF sensor would give? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

There have been tales of cracked air intake pipes, and on other cars I've seen a weakened pipe collapse down causing similar symptoms. Hard to spot too. Worth a visual check before resorting to dealers

Just been browsing for symptoms of a MAF failure and they are similar in the early stages. Will see what code gets thrown up and will have to take it from there - no intention of going to a dealers, if I can't fix it myself I know a good local Indy :)

I have k&n air filter panel and started getting uneven idling whist cold, thought the same has filter caused this but as my car has 95k on the clock, I just put it down to MAF gone wring. Anyway got a second hand MAF as new they are around £250, I got mine for £95 from fabirect.
Problem solved

Got the code with my new reader - P1554, sticking VANOS solenoid - although the light went out of it's own accord a couple of days ago and other than the symptom on the night it came on, the car has been running fine.

Will wait to see if it re-appears and take them out for a clean if so.
