Engine Light...

Morning all.

On the way to work this morning, the engine light came on on my 06 2.0. All seems to be driving ok.

I guess my next step is to take it into the garage for diagnostics? 4 weeks of ownership and I'm terrified! A private sale too.

Funny enough I had the exact same thing, right after 4 weeks too.
Hooked up the bmtechnic cable to my laptop and found some solenoid errors.
Couldn't be bothered swapping them around/cleaning them and just replaced both of them.
No errors since and it's the easiest job you can do yourself. Bit of a pain in the si but in the 2L engine should be like 10 mins.

There's a great DIY with photos on the forum somewhere...

Thanks Drac.

But are there any folks in the Windsor/London area with a diagnostics cable willing to help me out?

There may well be beer in it…..

Buy yourself a D900 OBDII Code reader from eBay, loads there on a 'buy it now' price for a little over £20 including postage. Always useful to carry in the boot. Saves a trek to the garage.

Would this do the job or do I need a specific BMW connector?

Also is there any risk of doing further damage to the car by driving it? I have an 80 mile round trip commute.

No risk in driving the car if it's driving OK.

This is the code reader I'd recommend. Very easy to use and many forum members have brought this model.

I've also bought this Bluetooth reader here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009NP5RPQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and was able to reset the check engine light with it and my android phone.
Would recommend laptop and OBD cable for in depth diagnostics.

+1 for buying a code reader and sussing it out yourself.
Whatever you do, do not, I repeat do not go to a main dealer and mention an engine light as they just see pound notes, your pound notes and they are very adept at extracting them from you for basically replacing everything on your engine that doesn't need replacing in a lame effort to cure the light.

Look at AndySat, started out with a simple amber light and a year later he's had to get a second mortgage and sell his granny just to get his car sorted...

Don't mention the pesky amber emissions light to Andy, he might have a relapse. :D

Yes you are so very right!

Andy, it would have been cheaper to just get the bulb taken out at the beginning...
