Engine light

Morning all, my Zed felt a bit ropey this morning, nothing major, just something a bit "off". After about 15mins of driving i accelerated hard and it started a little bit of judder and my engine light started to flash. I eased off and the judder stopped but the light continued to flash for a few minutes before going off and staying off. It was a yellow light and it was definitely the engine light, not the traction light.

Any suggestions?

Only one- get a code reader to see what the issue is, it could be a wide spectrum of issues

Where are you based

Have a search on here there are plenty of members on here who have Carly (or similar) who can help out

Fingers crossed it’s a small issue

What engine is it?

One of the many code readers that can diagnose issues

As it’s a 2.0 I am sure one of the four pot experts will be along in a min to advise what usual faults you can look at

Hope it gets fixed

You can normally buy a second hand Carly for about £30/40 to read to codes 👍

Have a look on Market Place there might be one for sale near you 🤞

Maybe change your title will help. Also I’m sure there is a list on here somewhere who has Carly and where 👍

Here's a link to the thread about members with Carly:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=97818

It will be a coil pack on its way out. Get a code reader and it will tell you which one. My guess it will be No 4, that is always the 1st to give up the ghost on the N46.

Cheers, tug

Cheers all. I was beginning to think it could my clutch on it's way out. My code reader is only a cheap one so I'm going to ask the mechanic at work to pop out with the company code reader (we have a garage on site to maintain our company vehicles) and see what he can find. I'll let you know what he finds.

You can get a BMW 1.4 scanner off ebay for like £14. A worthwhile investment even for limited use at that price.

Update: I had the mechanic at work put his fancy code reader on it and it came back as showing 4 faults. One for the cat converter and 3 for a misfire on cylinder 1. He recommended changing the spark plug and ignition coil as a cheap starter so I bought 4 plugs and 1 coil on the way home.
When I went to change them, the coil on No1 cylinder was a different make to the other 3 and much cleaner and newer. Still, I had nothing to lose so changed all 4 plugs and the coil on No1 cylinder.
This morning it seems to be running fine so I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on No1 cylinder in the future.

Fingers crossed you've solved it then. Looks like [ref]tug[/ref] was on the mark again.
Sounds like someone fitted a cheapo coil on No1.
I suppose if you wanted to prove it you could fit that coil on a different cylinder and see if the fault occurs there?
But all the time its running ok, leave it alone.

I intend to, last thing i want right now is an expensive repair bill as my kitchen roof has just gone and is not covered by my house insurance

Glad its sorted mate, also glad i didnt put money on cyl 4 :D The cat code will come up as normal after misfire so no concern there. Also you probably need the kitchen roof relocating to the boot.

Cheers, tug

Haha, I might just move the oven and fridge into the boot, the missus can go too and give me some peace and quiet.

Get rid of the Mrs and you’ll not have money to fix anything else for a long time :tumbleweed:

Glad you got sorted
