engine light on....first time taking car out

My EML has been on for months, no drop in performance but the code reader shows 2C46 as the fault. That seems to be Oxygen sensor 2 before Cat.
Anybody know what the fix is?

Apparently my literally just received yesterday 3.0i had its EML light come on for about two seconds on the motorway, into limp I believe, then turn off again. This happened about 90 miles into it's 110 mile delivery journey (my Dad was at the wheel at the time and only decided to tell me this today!) I went for an hour long mixed roads drive this afternoon and a few other short journeys since then with no issues.

Should I be worried?

Probably a new pre cat lambda sensor.

Spent thousands sorting mine out- still came on!

Legend has it that you single-handedly financially supported the BMW network in your area Andy... :D

Sadly you are not alone. Stung badly by putting my trust into a dealership for this issue which recurred even after I had handed over thousands :x . My EML light on the old 2.0 was an intermittent affair. Used to flick on especially on flooring it but never seemed to cause any performance problems.

Good luck

Cheers JC :D

It's just that the sensors before and after the cat are comparing gases in/out and expect a certain reading within limits. The usual scenario with this code is for a stealer to replace one then the other sensor, then the cat itself, then the manifold usually.
They count your money and laugh, you wring your hands and cry.

Just buy a cheap code reader, read it, note it and cancel it, much better on the finances... :D

If the pre-cat sensor is duff (which is entirely likely) then just replace it - £80 from Amazon for Bosch, £130 from BMW. The post-cat sensors are unlikely to fail - they're just there to make sure the cat is working.

I have a 55 2.0lt and had this problem just after purchasing. It turned out to be a cracked exhaust manifold. The only other sign was a slight, very slight blowing noise on idle from the engine. Had it fixed a the local garage with a weld. Has been fine for the last year. I picked this fault up from a previous forum discussion and there were a few people with the same problem which seems a weakness of the 2ltr model.

Our 2.0 2005, shows the engine management light. Had it checked and was told it was the particle filter in the exhaust. Warning lights on this car are a regular occurrence, but none have none have been about anything serious. Now the seat belt light is on, even though the seat belts are secured. This happened after I'd had the door handle mechanics fixed!
