Engine light after winter startup

My Z4 (2003 3.0) was in my garage the whole winter. When I finally started it up, the engine did not run on all cylinders and the engine light came on. The engine soon started to sound normal but the light still stayed on. I tried restarting it couple of times but no luck.

Should I just disconnect the battery and try if it resets the warning, or should I go to the service and pay 50-100 euros for them to do it with ODB?

Someone said the cat's might be damaged if the engine burns the fuel too rich, I personally have no idea if the engine will run differently with the engine error..

Suggestions?

Mine did that after being parked up for six months last year. But after a gentle 3-4 mile run and switching off/on again it vanished and never came back.

But then I found it had also gone into transport mode so aircon/heated rear window/fan didn't work properly....still haven't made it to the dealers for a reset. :(

The engine light is displayed for a whole host of reasons. If the car was misfiring at the start it could be the O2 Sensors telling the ecu that too much fuel was getting through ( or a whole host of other things ). There is no way to tell without reading the codes.

I brought a £50 ODBII scanner for this very reason. A dealer will no doubt want 1/2 an hours labor ( £60? ) to read the code and tell you what it is. If your in the surrey/hampshire area your welcome to pop over and see what the code is / reset it and see if it comes back.
