2007 3.0i N52 auto. after driving passenger side of the motor is hot to the touch. hood and fender are also hot.. driver side is fine. temp gauge is at the mid point. Just replaced eccentric shaft sensor with new gaskets. do not remember having a heat issue before. any ideas

You checked the brake caliper on pax side isn’t binding?
Check wheel temps after driving.
Binding calipers can cause thermal energy transfer.

Using the term passenger side, could mean either side, is the car LHD, as if it is then the passenger side is the exhaust side?

It will get hot, it’s an engine, I’m guessing you are in USA, so passenger side will be the exhaust side and it will get hot.
There is no heat shielding on the underside of the hood, so long as the running temp is ok don’t worry about it.

Yes they do get hot, on warm days when it has rained I remember seeing steam coming off the bonnet/hood of my N52 cars even though the temperature gauge was reading normal.
