Engine/exhaust rattle when held at 3000 RPM

Hello,

When my car is revved to a high RPM or at a very low speed my car makes a rasping noise.

I've not had this on Z's before.

I thought it may be an air filter issue.

Any ideas?

Tricky to say from that description TBH, is it running OK?

If it's from the engine bay I'd be checking for obvious inlet or exhaust leaks, loose heat shields and exhaust baffles. If its from the engine area check out the possibility that it's the OIL filter, bizarrely several people on here have found that aftermarket oil filters can create a high pitched raspy whine like in this Vid, cured by changing to an OEM quality oil filter.

Thanks mate. I've now found that when held at 3000 RPM its constant.

I'll attach a video.

Help would be much appreciated :driving:

Well it's not typical inlet or exhaust leak blowing noise, but it's difficult to tell if it's from the front, underneath or rear from the video, any idea?
I'd be getting underneath with a mate prodding the pedal and homing in on it, eliminating easy to fix issues like loose heat shields, internal exhaust baffle or loose components first.

If it's from the engine it could be the oil filter as mentioned, VANOS unit rattle or even the cam chain tensioner, the latter two seem to be common faults on the N46 2.0 But you do really need to fix the location a bit better.
