Engine cutting out

Hi there, does anyone else have an issue with their Z4 cutting out? It only happens once every so often but when it does it usually happens when rolling out of a junction and then trying to take off. It doesn't stall, just dies for a few seconds then revs back up!

It's a 2005 with 51k on the clock. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It doesn't stall, just cuts out then kicks back in after a few seconds.

It's a 2l petrol engine. Not sure what OP means though?

i know exhaust manifoilds are sometimes an issue on the 2 litre, does it throw up any EML at all anytime?

1st step - read the error codes. Have a look at BM cables, £30 for cable and software. Without having a read first - it's all guesswork.

EML light used to come on and off. Had a catalyst sensor replaced and that seemed to work. Apart from a traction control light flashing up every so often no other lights come on

So when you say cutting out, you mean it just drops to idle. Sounds like a dicky sensor and being intermittent may not always show on a diagnostic.

What I'm thinking.

Have you disconnected the maf for starters?

Cam and crank sensors are common failure points, but i think they completely cut the engine. Not always something that show up on diagnostics either.

Guess it could also be throttle related? IIRC its a fly by wire system, so perhaps the signal isn't being read properly or something daft.

Do you use Supermarket fuel? I would start by filling up with top quality fuel and give it some redex cleaner. You just never know it could simply be fuel related.

Hi
I have the same problem on a 2006 2.0 sport 53k, diagnostic says it was engine immobiliser and the key has rolling codes and as its 10years old so may have worn out, and speaking to local BMW dealer a new key ordered which comes coded, been fine for 200 miles and started cutting out again losing power and stalls as if the immobiliser has cut in. it will start again after taking key out, locking and unlocking and starts again, did you find a solution?! Very frustrating thanks
