Engine Choice

Hi Chaps,

I've been looking at getting a Z4, and guessing this forum would be a good place to ask some questions.

After a confusing start I've now got my head around the variety of engine models out there, IE the difference between the i and si models.I currently own a civic sport (110bhp) and fancy a bit of an upgrade for my 28th birthday soon (yey insurance prices!)

Now if I've got this right, for the era I'm looking at (06/07) There are the following choices:

2.0l i 150bhp
2.5l i 175bhp
2.5l si 214bhp
3.0l i 231bhp
3.0l si 261bhp

I'm having difficulty deciding between the 2.5l and the 3.0l. Aparrently the lower rated 2.5l has much less resale value - can anyone confirm this?

Also, are the running costs between the 2.5 (i or si) considerably less than the 3.0?

Thanks,

David

Hi Discodave (like the name)

This topic has been covered a lot in the last few months.

Basically most forumites will encourage you to go for the full 3.0 litre as the difference in mpg is small enough to merit the improvement in performance and other running costs are similar or the same.

The forumites with 2.5s will let you know they enjoy their 6 cylinder Zeds and they have good performance on the road.

The 3.0si sport is sought after as it has the //M suspension seats steering wheel and wheels options as standard.

Do continue to research via the forum as there are lots of extras and options that also carry weight in personal choice including wheels.

It's all part of the fun finding and buying your Zed - check out the For sale section of the forum - excellent well cared for examples come up from time to time.

:driving:

Your better with the 3ltr si (N52). BMW's last and supposidly best non M n/a engine. Combining performance and economy.

The pre facelift 2.5 was around 196 bhp IIRC and dropped to 175 at facelift when it changed to the N52

Any sport model including the 2.0 has these as standard.

Go test drive a few, that will help you make your mind up

Running costs are not massively different from 2.5 to 3.0 - but if you do 30,000 miles per year it could be important.

Good luck with your search  :driving:

Thanks for the comments guys.

I think my budget can stretch to a 3.0l model, which is what I'll be looking for.

Thanks a lot for your help :)

@Adamski - I work from home most of the time (4 days a week) and when I'm needed in the office I have to take a train, the station is about a 7 mile drive away, therefore I'm not after a mile munching road warrior.

There are only 3 engine options on the E85 3.0Li the 3.0LSi and the 3.2L M, buy whatever you can afford, if you cant afford any of these, get an MX5, that's my opinion.

Youve just got to laugh at the sound in the first vid lol.

Agree with others, 6 cylinders or don't bother...

I have to say that my Z4M makes the most gorgeous sound, it is aural bliss; no radio needed... Especially once over 5000rpm...

Its addictive, very addictive...

4 pot not!

Thanks for the advice guys.

I took a test drive in a 3.0si today. My word, the engine was so smooth and the noise was great.

Definitely the choice I will be going for. Now the hunt begins.
