engine choice.....?

hi all, im looking to buy a z4 soon and being a volkswagen man for the last 20 years im on a learning curve,,,
im a member of 3 or 4 volkswagen forums and give lots of advice about mainly volkswagen transporter t4 stuff and thats my other drive,,,,, but basicly im looking at engine choice for now,, 2.2...? 2.5...? 3.0...? and until ive driven one im put off the 2.0 beacause im drawn to the straight 6 engines,,, unless you lot disagree..
advice welcome..
 
Hello and welcome

As you said yourself, take the 2ltr and 3ltr for a test drive, do your math on running costs and then make your decision. (but whatever the engine size go for a large spec'd car e.g heated seats, sav nav, sport seats etc)

In short all the 3 ltr drivers will say go for nothing smaller, while the 2ltr drivers are more than content with theirs

The 2.0l engine wouldn't pull the skin from a rice pudding.

2.5l and above would be sufficient, as these cars weigh quite a bit it will take a bit more to move them.
 
29.8mpg on mine (3.0l) for this fill up. I don't drive like a tool so fuel consumption is relatively impressive.
 
My Z4 3.0si was driven fairly sensibly the majority of the time (I'm not really one to drive fast), and it returned 26mpg over the lifetime of owning it.
My M again is driven sensibly, and that is currently returning 24mpg, though I've only driven it about 300 miles!
 
if the 3.ol can get 30mpg i would be well happy with that... any 2.5 drivers want a say as to what they get......?
and 2.0l.....?
 
There isn't much different in fuel economy with the 2.5, as far as I have seen. For big benefits on fuel consumption, you'd need to get the 2.0.

yes ide read that myself,,, sounds to me already that the 3.0l is the one to go for,,, need to drive a 2.0 though and see from there...
 
Definitely drive both. I think once you've driven a 6-cylinder, unless you're worried about fuel economy, you're daft not to get one.

yes mate, need to drive both.. my bora does near 50mpg with 160bhp tdi but part of me buying a z4 means im prepaired for less mpg, just dont want to get myself im a position where im stuggleing to run it or watching the fuel gauge more than anything else going on................... but i think it the 3.0l can get 30mpg i would be happy with that, ( it is a big motor after all )
 
I took delivery of a pre owned 3.0 SE 3 weeks ago and get 30 miles to the gallon going to and from work. On longer runs up to the lake district and back with a mixture of motorway and A roads the figure is a very impressive 38 mpg. These figures are very similar to our other car a VW scirroco 2.0 fsi turbo.

We have owned 2 mx5's in the past and because you had to work these engines fairly hard on a long run low 30's was the norm.

In summary very pleased with our choice and love the masses of torque you get and the sound track is intoxicating - I would say go for the 3 litre you won't be dissapointed. The power delivery reminds me of the Z1000 KAWASAKI I used to ride back in the eighties - power instantly on tap whenever you need it. For a big engine I think the fuel economy is pretty damned good - now looking forward to next June/July when we will do a road trip to the Alps. :D

trip to the alps in your z4 sounds awesome mate,, ,, whats the miles you do to and from work mate....?
 
30 mpg on a 10 mile trip on pot holed rural Lancashire roads - I don't rush to work - save the fun for the week ends.

thats almost exactly the same as me 9.8m, thats the shortest route, could make it about 12 miles the other way round....
 
I am biased towards the 3.0 as I own one.

Commuting I see 30-35mpg... Weekends 27mpg ish.

If you're ok with the running costs, a 3.0 won't disappoint :thumbsup:

I drive my 3.0 at 70 on the motorway with a 60 mile round commute each day and get 31-32 mpg's on average including having a bit of fun at weekends!

Just get a 3 litre and enjoy it! :driving:
