engine bay plastics

does anyone know what the plastic used on cars in the engine bay is called? the stuff things like thermostat housings and cam covers etc are made of and that are in contact with the engine so need to be able to take the temps involved, not so much the airbox and the like?

alternatively a suitable type of plastic that will take high temp and not deform, absorb moisture etc? so far suggestions have been PEEK, PTFE and glass fibre nylon. peek and ptfe are chuffing expesive when you ask for a 200x150x80 block of it :D
 
not sure in the Z4 engine bay but in my last car they were ABS plastics they had a stamp on the back when i painted them and hydrodipped them.

Its ETB Plastic and has a a special NGW polymer that creates challenges for Z owners........... (ETB ....Easy to break and NGW..... No glue works) :rofl: Apologies
 
Ha ha peek and ptfe are very expensive. peek is lovely to machine ptfe is a pain in the ass as it's so soft. Would delrin not work it's fairly heat resistant I think. I will ask a guy at work Monday delrin is black as well.
 
Delrin is ok but limited on high temp stability.

I do have the spec for plastics for heat areas somewhere I will have to have a dig, it's for upto 230'C regular use and 350'C intermittently.

But it is expensive as you can imagine a block is a solid mass where most components are moulded and are as thin as needed to remain rigid in operation.
 
I wondered on Delrin but didn't think it could do the heat.

Any ideas are good thanks. At the mo I'm looking at Ali block but that poses milling problems for me whereas plastic doesn't.
