Energy costs (again)

I don't have gas, but read that they are forcing oil boilers out by 2025 where you would have to install ground source heat. Estimated costs around £40k average so it seems.

[/quote]I was speaking to a chap when he was servicing our boiler about heat pumps and he said they are fine on new builds but a nightmare and totally impractical on any other properties.

Its not just the cost of fitting the pump (Which is the one they all quote as being circa £12 - 20k) that's the problem. Because they don't heat the water up to the temperatures a gas boiler reaches, all the pipe work has to be a larger bore and has to be insulated to retain every bit of heat possible. The rads also have to be either bigger or more of them to match what we have now.

As a result, all existing pipework in the house has to be replaced and in our case that means ripping up all the hardwood floors or burying them into the walls. That's what bungs the costs up and all the inconvenience.

Hopefully hydrogen fuel will be on stream to replace gas soon and it's a simple conversion of current gas boilers to cope.

Yes this is what our boiler fitter said almost word for word last year and he is an independent not British Gas. He seemed to think the heat pumps are unworkable for most houses.

The price of Electricity has indeed gone up - but the money they give for PV generation has only risen by 1p or thereabouts

It's not the size, it's what you do with it that matters (so the wife keeps telling me) :D
