bmwblog.com raises the question of what follows the current Z4. Perhaps there will be no replacement. The thinking is that a Z2 would come to market at a lower price point and possibly front wheel drive. That seems odd now that Jaguar has entered the market with its two-seater. The concern seems to be that so few Z4s (and MB SLKs) are sold.

In between having the E85 and E89 I had a 325i coupe (E92)... and agree... it was a nice all round car, but had a very different feel to a roadster. I've been in a few E93's and just didn't take to them.
I'm happy to sit with the E89 for another couple of years and see what's on the market then.

I think they (Mazda MX5 ) started at 1.8 then to 1.8 and now I think 2.0 ----- BMW seems to be taking the other direction. 
In my youth during the late 60's I always wanted a Healey 3000 - I couldn't afford one - The 3.0 Z4 seems to me the only modern equivalent and it will be a sad day when or if they either drop it or change its character completely.

Garage space is the problem!
I've had a lot of cars during the last forty or so years that are now very expensive classics - I often wish I still had them - But I wouldn't have had the space to store them properly.

The Z4 is the 9th worst selling car in the US. We're also BMWs biggest market, so that's saying something.
This post got me thinking - if the Z4 had never been made, what would you be driving right now?
It a tough one, there's no obvious replacement (for me at least) if you want a good looking, very quick convertible at or around the same money as a zed.
I don't like Porsches so that rules out the boxter / cayman.
SLk? - I don't think you can really drive this as a guy, even in AMG form.
F Type? - didn't exist when I bought the zed but soft top / lack of boot space probably rule this out (I at least want to be able to pack a couple of overnight bags for a weekend trip) - fair bit more expensive than the zed too. The hard top when it gets here will be epic I'm sure.
Merc SL - lovely car in my view, but a big step up in price from the Z. Has a slight image problem as a golf club shuttle for retirees.
AUDI TT - maybe, but they're a bit plain, not a patch on the zed looks wise and they're literally everywhere.
I'd probably be in something very different, perhaps an M3 with the benefit if a bit of depreciation to bring the price in line.
If they never make another z4, this conundrum will be real in a few years time

I would be driving a Cayman S. In fact, I highly regret not getting one. I've only had my Z for 4 months, but I'm going to dump it in a year and move to a Cayman S.

I've been keeping an eye on M6 second hand values - you can pick up sub 5000 mile, 2012 examples for c.£65k at the moment - approved used (after ticking a couple of option boxes that would have been a £100k car) - looks like a real bargain to me (in relative terms at least)
Really not sure what sort of person buys a car, runs it for a couple of thousand miles and then jacks it in for a 35% loss - constantly 'surfing' the steepest part of the depreciation curve is a fine way of wasting money IMHO - and the M6 curve looks unusually steep!
Give it another year and I suspect there'll be a few creeping into the £50 - 55k range at which point I could be very tempted with a bit of 'man maths' thrown in.
An absolute animal of a car - would love to give one a go!

its also the only new car I've had that never went back to the dealer with a fault unlike every bmw I've ever owned
