What happened about going on holiday first, digest material and stroll back to the dealer in a months time? :poke:

Man Logic set in !

I made a fundamental mistake, I called into the dealer without Mrs K for an unrelated reason and just got talking to them !
They wanted me to sign there and then, but my sensible brain cell was there fortunately. Hiwever I've just had a call from another local dealer who wants me to go and see him this morning .

One of them is going to be huffed I think.

I've been reading more on the Z5, it could actually be the perfect car. Larger, look better than competitor models, hybrid and more options. When you compare the newer Z4 to the old Z4, the Z5 could be phenomenal. I just hope they keep it in the same price point otherwise the Z will be forgotten entirely.

Did you do the broad speed quote to take with you?

I didn't, because a family friend showed me the live Bmw system and the cars coming into the uk were all a "555 status" which is a locked down / in build status - he did a search for an acceptable build for me and he found one with the required toys. I should add the guy is not in sales and had no axe to grind apart from that he is trustworthy.

The dealer I first talked to said he had a build slot available - it is I'm told, an industry standard ploy, get the punter signed up with the promise, then sweet talk them into something acceptable.

Call me a Luddite if you want but I still like the idea of a big capacity six cylinder lump of an engine at the front. That's the whole appeal of the Z4 for me.

I'm not really a Luddite, as I still like all the clever electronics and I've had turbo engined cars since 1980!

I am happy with all the spec that has been suggested but IMHO it's a backward step fitting it with a soft top
I hear all the arguments about weight but a half decent sports car shouldn't be penalised by a couple of extra kilos unless your are racing on a track.
I only hope the soft top in the pics are merely camouflage and there is really a hard top under there or this will be my last BMW. :(

It is quite funny, some people complain about how much weight the roof adds........ go on a diet if you are that bothered about extra weight.

With a 35is the additional weight is not a concern. With me it's more the looks and a little bit of practicality.
The wife may think it's a little bit of a weight issue

Tbh I'm fine with the soft top idea as it would lessen weight and also be less complicated as a mechanism for reliability.

Having had a closer look at the photos on the net which are heavily disguised I am more convinced the soft top is merely camouflage.

Anyone else had a look?

Looks like a soft top to me, shape of the window and the roof itself. I did read somewhere that there was going to be a soft top and the return of the coupe.

Too late for me - I've coughed up for a new one.
I hope it's a well sorted product by now - not that my current 2010 car has given me any grief.

I am quite sure it is a soft top. BMW is all about lightness, eco and efficiency nowadays. That is also why the 2.0 Turbo is going into almost everything now. For me the extra weight is well worth it. My older convert leaked, rattled at speed, and got moldy and looked old after a short time and the visibility was claustrophobic. Hope my E89 keeps on.

I would never go soft top.
MG I had the roof went mouldy when stored shut with hard top on.
And they all look like pram hoods.
The Zed is the only BMW I considered based on looks and the hard top, otherwise wouldn't have bothered.
Wasn't bought for the badge, just looked the part, the interior looked slightly retro, whereas other sports cars had boring black interiors.

In Portugal at the moment and went to Vilamoura - Merc had a bit of a show on with all the new models including the new SLC - this has a nice metal retractable top like the E89 - so you never know BMW may look at this and think missing sales (£s) if they do go soft top only route 8)

Surely the easiest thing is to offer the Z5 with both a soft top or folding metal roof as Mazda have done?

I think our 35i/35is will go up in desirability if they release a 3 cylinder soft top hybrid mess. We don't spend 55k to worry about a few mpg, batteries and a mouldy roof.

Soft tops are crap, always have been always will be. I've yet to be in one where I don't feel like I'm driving an expensive tent.

If I absolutely must have a soft top then I'd rather get an F-Type or a Porsche. I can't see the Z5 being more exciting or better to drive than either of those. I could be proven wrong.

Is this it or concept.

Too fussy with all the vents.
Soft top?
Looks like a saloon car.

I hope that is just a terrible drawing and that it doesn't really look like that when it comes into production. For me it's too square and I agree too many vents. I, like other people who have posted, am not a lover of soft tops.

Looks like be sticking with my lovely E89 :D
