End of an Era - Sellers remorse already?

Evening all, I've been a long time viewer and posted a few times over the years. I'm writing tonight with a degree of sadness, as tomorrow my 6.5 years ownership of my beloved Z4 Coupe will come to an end. I've covered over 100,000 miles in my car since I took ownership, It's been with me during happy times and with me during sad/difficult times, my Coupe has been the best car I've ever owned, it's never let me down and it's still one of the best looking cars on the road in my opinion.

For reasons I cannot fully explain however, for the past 9-12 month's I've just been wanting something more modern, more comfortable and something that is a bit better on fuel. I am tending to be mostly on dual carriageways and motorways these days and I often have to drive 150 miles to London to see my Girlfriend and to be honest, I was getting out of the Z4 feeling tired with a back ache and weirdly aching on the inside of my knees?? I was also tiring of the small fuel tank which meant a full re-fill after every return London trip (although the car was averaging 39mpg on such runs which has always impressed me).

The car that caught my attention 9-12 months ago was the 6 series coupe... whilst I do not think they look as pretty as the Z4 coupe they do look handsome to me and they certainly have presence. I kept looking and watching and telling myself I didn't want/need one but the urge didn't go away. As such, tomorrow I am picking up a 2016 plate 640d (fully loaded) that has done a mere 14,000 miles, whilst no Rolls Royce it is infinitely more comfortable than the Z4 and I must admit to liking the gadgets. I will miss the N52 and the manual gearbox sometimes no doubt, but the 40d engine is not bad for a Diesel and on an extended test run I was achieving 50mpg at motorway speeds which I'm happy with.

Whilst I am excited about the new car I am genuinely sad at the prospect of part exchanging the Z4, it is weird how one can get so emotionally attached to such things but the number of time's I have thought about backing out of the deal this past week you will not believe!

So tomorrow will be my last day with it, and also over 10 years of Z4 ownership (I previously had a 2003 3.0 convertible) will come to an end. I have tried to justify the idea of keeping my coupe but to be honest I don't have the time, money or drive space to do it justice. I only hope that the next owner looks after it as I'd hate the thought of it being ruined.

Anyway, apologies for the essay! just the waffling of a man who has finally succumbed to wanting something lazy and comfortable but knowing I'll probably mourn a loss too!

Just to say also that this is an excellent forum and has been so valuable to me over the last 10 years, I hope that when I have more funds available that I'll be able to buy another coupe at some point and keep it as a weekend toy rather than a daily hack. Who knows.

Thanks

Thanks for sharing mate. A sad tale indeed but I get the need for increased comfort and space generally. I sold my z4c for the same reasons back in 2010 having owner from new. Never quite got over it though so last year bought back the same car as my weekender, although I seem to be using it more than that. I also seem to be spending a lot more on it this time around - in terms of upgrades rather than anything breaking (touch wood). Great cars. You’ll be back...

Well don’t be surprised if you return to the fold like many do, including myself

Probably the best thing to do in the circumstances although it also allows you to come back and get a Roadster as you're probably still sore that you didn't get one originally.

It's understandable!

Understandable what your saying about something newer/more comfy and for that very reason its nice for some of us to have other cars to jump into.
Alternative solution, part ex the girlfriend! :poke:

I hope you don't come to regret it - I did, that's the only reason I'm on my 2nd E86! :headbang:

Still I only went 2 days without one!

But to be fair neither was used as a daily driver, so each time I drive it feels a bit special.

Shame you couldn't keep it and just get a daily driver to go with it, but your new car sounds lovely - I hope that makes up for it.
