Last week I got told I may be out of work for a period of time at the begging of 2014.

Over the weekend I had an interview with the sales director for Cox motor group.

All went well, had a meeting at my local dealer (Honda) on Monday and got the job there and then.

I will be taking home significantly less money but I'm sort of thinking long term and I hope that my previous business experience will speed up promotion to management.

So if your thinking of buying a Honda, I'm your man lol.

I went through redundancy in 2011. Now living the dream (well, not quite!), in Edinburgh. I got a job right after being made redundant, but move 18 months later to a different industry. Loving it so far

I'm sure you'll do great and fast track to success

Well done m8, pleased you found something so quick especially as Companies are offering less for doing the same role.

It's much easier to find another job if you're in one already, so suggest you don't rest & also look elsewhere, just in case you need to move on if management & money don't appear in this new role.

Good luck with the new job! For what it's worth, every time I've changed roles I've had a lower basic, but never been worse off by the end of the year.

Investing in yourself and taking a longer term view is a smart move

We have a Honda as the family car - bullet-proof motors

Congratulations, it will pay off in the long run. I agree with Jembo, easier to find a job when you're in one. Took me a bloody long time.

Popey, awful timing but really great news on the new job and am sure you'll be levelling up within months. As you say, play the long game my friend. If it feels right then it probably is

When I come to get a new family car I'll definitely drop you a line. Quite like a Cr-V as a future inkey$ all-mobile :D

Good luck with the new job, Hondas' sell themselves so can't go wrong.

Question: being an ignorant colonial type, I heard years back that you folks got redundancy payments, sometimes quite large. We don't get made redundant, we get "Laid Off" and sometimes there are severance pmts or sometimes the minimum that govt requires, based on years of service etc. for example, if I had been laid off instead of retiring I would have got (with 21.5 yrs service) between 5 and 10 months pay, depending on how nasty the company was at the time, As a retiree I got nothing.....just my pension intact.

Is there a govt mandated minimum severance pmt in the UK??

One week's pay for every year worked up to a maximum of £320 per week. Anything over this is discretionary or contractual.
It's pants and a lot of bigger firms pay well over this. But most firms don't.

Nice one popey, good effort, pretty tough times so great going, could always be worse and as guys have said you'll soon be leveling up. Honda are looking up, they have a few interesting cars coming up...

You're target is obviously to get a new Nsx as you're company motor right?

Thanks guys, I have been working on self employed basis so no money coming my way.

Thanks again for all the support and merry Christmas!

My unemployment/redundancy days were in the early 80's - Tough times with high interest rates on the mortgage a new daughter etc - It was just one of life's many challenges to overcome, tough at the time tho.
