EML - multiple codes HELP!

Hi All,

Sorry if there’s already a thread for this, I’m not quite aquanted with how to use this forum properly as of yet.

My 3.0 Z4 starting rough idling yesterday, the revs fluctuating between about 800rpm and 1200rpm when stopped in neutral, a knocking sound and un-nerving vibrations. My car also has a backbox delete and backfires quite a lot, however mostly when I tap the throttle etc - however since this rough idle started happening, it is backfiring from the exhaust pipes almost all the time!

Today, I still had to drive the car to work, same problem and the yellow EML came on the Rev counter during that drive. I drove it home too, and I ran a cheap code reader earlier today and got these error messages, see the photos attached. The car is going into my local tomorrow, but just wanted to know if anyone has had the same/similar issue and might know what the resolve or problem is/was! Thanks in advance!

Joel.

It’s probably your MAF, or your spark plugs or coil pack.

When was your last Inspection 2 and what’s the mileage?

Hi mate,

Thank you for your super speedy reply, really appreciate it. I guess any of those things aren’t “major”.

My last I2 was about 5K miles ago, although the plugs and coils haven’t been changed for about 30K I don’t think. My mileage is just over 133k

No worries buddy.

Your plugs should’ve been done at your last Inspection 2...

I would be asking some questions of your garage.

New plugs and coil packs will almost certainly sort it. Need to check the intake hose as well for splits.

Quick update, the garage say it’s the MAF sensor - however they quoted me £350 for the part, that seems ridiculous? Does anyone know of a good part that I can buy for them to fit instead?

That seems expensive. I believe you can clean them and there are threads on here about that. I think one problem can be with those K&N filters and over oiling them. Oil can then get into the MAF and lead to running problems.

£350 for the MAF alone sounds like cowboy prices.

As I said earlier, I would ask questions of that garage buddy.

You shouldn’t pay anymore than £150 for brand new MAF and you don’t need a mechanic to do it either. It’s simply a matter of plugging out your old one and inputting your new one. 5 min job if that.

Don’t bother cleaning your old one as it will be toast at 130k miles. From my experience MAFs usually last about 80k, so 130k on the original MAF is pretty good. Also don’t buy a cheap eBay one as it won’t last very long. If you don’t want to go OEM, Bosch MAFs are pretty good.

Might be worth giving BMW Sopers of Lincoln parts department a call to see what they quote, bearing in mind that they offer discount to Z4 Forum members.

Joel get a tin of Wynns maf sensor cleaner from Halfords before you pay for a new sensor it's only a tenner so it must be worth a try if the sensor is only oiled up.

@it's Joel ,I see on your YouTube channel you got this fixed by changing the DISA valve, good info in case mine ever packs up.
