Ah-ha! Clever clogs has sorted the following:

Bought a 3.0 E85 in Eastbourne, drove her home (150 miles) never missed a beat & loved every minute.
Being an 'arse' & even though she had been serviced 4k miles ago I had her serviced at mate's garage, oil-filters-gearbox oil-diff oil & felt chuffed.
Took her on an A road & 20 miles on, the dreaded EML light came on, no change in how she drove so carried on.
Back at mate's garage his OBD came up with 'lean bank 1 & 2' but no specific problem. Apparently non genuine air filters have a tendency to bring on the EML, so, changed for a genuine BMW one (£21 please sir!!) installed & test drove..........local roads no problem, main A road on cruise at 65mph (I'm old!) 40 miles on...........EML light again!
We must have touched something on the service me thinks, took the air cleaner off & with a torch there's an elbow from the air cleaner to the throttle body that has a corrugated rubber connection......yep! cracked in-between the ribs of the rubber.
Just need to sort one from BMW & we'll be sorted.
A common problem people say, so if your EML light comes on this could be the answer.

Aye, just sorted this on mine. My lower intake boot was holier than the pope! The small receptacle on the outside face of the elbow had also perished and a vac line was dangling free and easy in the breeze.
Sorted the lean codes when replaced but hasn't fixed my rough idle problem though....grrr
