EML light on car in limp mode

I started my 2.0 SE yesterday and my EML lights came on and it went into limp mode ie low power from the engine pulling away ive had it checked on a computer and its come up with 2 faults Oxygen sensor and VVT he cleared it and the EML lights came on again b4 i left the car park he told me to drive it a bit and then computer check it again 2 see if both faults had come on again :( so has anyone had this or any ideas for common faults ? btw its not misfireing thanks in advance

Cracked exhaust manifold seems common on the 2.0, an air leak upstream of the oxygen sensors can cause a fault code.

My light came on a few weeks ago,and I went to the indie who checked the diagnostic and reset the fault. However it came back on, luckily didn't go into limp mode, and today it was into the workshop, and it was a cracked manifold. They gave me two options, a new one for £900 and something (missed the smaller numbers in shock) or they could weld it up for £230, so weld it was. Now the light has gone out and it sounds quieter.
Quite why a casting should fail is a bit of a mystery, surely it's just a lump of metal ?

Heating and cooling...expansion and contraction?

Just a thought, I've never bothered to learn too much about engines, just electrics for me.

Yes but a manifold is expected to get hot and expand and then cool and contract, it's its job ! Happens in millions of engines everyday without cracking ! Expected better from BMW.

Same happened on mine, surprisingly the manifolds are not cast, they are just the same steel as the rest of the exhaust so it's a simpler job to weld, but that's why they are prone to cracking. Mine is still in the garage from last Monday, the manifold apparently is not the fault with mine......again.

Might be a bit late now but when my EML light came on it was the valvetronic pump packed up and then it was discovered that the ECU had also packed up, apparantly the valvetronic pump fault went straight to earth without blowing a fuse and knackered the ECU, I had only owned the car for 2 weeks and the garage that I bought it from, AUTO CARS in Bursrwick near Hull footed the bill of £ 1400 great garage .

Good job!!

thanks 4 all your replys so ill let u no where I am I took the car back to the garage and the VVT fault still showed up O2 sensor ok i droped the car off @ 2pm and they had it til 9 @ night and cud not find the fault saying they did not have the equipment to test the parts that needed tested and they only charged me 20 for the computer test . the guy @ the garage said he new a man who cud test the engine VVT sensors and to take 2 him the next day @ 3 well i had to go out and comeing back b4 i went to the garage the car started pulling to the left and the flat tyre sensor came on and my front tyre was totally flat i had to drive about 3 miles 2 quick fit after a hours wait i found out i didnt av any run flat tyres and the tyre had a big screw in and it was by the edge so the tyre was a write off £80 later i was home .

I phoned the guy and he said he couldnt test it and to take to BM euro servives as they was realy good , so next day ( wednesday i rang them and the cudnt look @ the car til the following thursday which is where its been as its saturday today and im hopeing to get it back on monday with a £800 bill @ least . so wot was wrong ? the timing chain was lose so a tensioner as been put on and a motor in the engine had gone faulty and a software update was needed and now there was PSU fault and a loom from the battery in the boot to the enging had corroded and burnt out causing the power to drop to the front of the car he said he wud repair this but needs a new loom @ sum point but ill let u no wot the parts replaced are when i get it back

got my car back fully working :) I had the Motor servo valvetronic replaced and tensioner md timing chain replaced and there was a power supply fault which was a power loom running from the battery to the engine under the car which is covered with a plastic cover under the car the loom had @ some point been taken out of its clip and pushed back in and it had ripped the insulation and this had gone bright green and corroded so they replaced part of the loom as a new loom wud have been 250 inc fitting this took care of the PSU fault that was coming up on the diagnostics and the software was updated the total cost for the fault finding and parts and vat came to 570 I was suppled with photos of the loom damage and all computer readouts showing all faults and software update b4 and after .
One gauarge could not fix it and another didnt want to try so BM Euroservice wolverhampton were very good doing the repair work
