EML followed by Engine Management light ?

Dear all ,

New Z4 owner of 2 weeks motoring . 2.0 2008 model and all was good until I decided to take a 2 hr drive Dorset - Windsor . On stopping to park , then moving on after 15 mins a EML light appeared on the binnacle and the car for a few minutes felt a bit underpowered. Light stayed on but underpowered went away . Next day after topping up fuel and driving away from garage another engine management light also came on 🙈 wife said she saw a bit of smoke from rear end exhaust ?

Drove back from Dorset yesterday with both lights on but car seemed to be running fine . Any similar experiences out there ?. Or anyone able to suggest the possible fault ?.

Many thanks in advance
Peter

You’d need to get the codes scanned to stand any chance of knowing what the issue is

Do you have access to an obd scanner?

Common 2.0 issues could be valvetronic, sensors or just the good old manifold cracking

But that’s all conjecture until you get the actual codes

Bigwinn,

Thanks for your input . I don’t have a scanner so I will have to rely on the local garage to do diagnostics. Think the car was previously only used around local country roads so I’m guessing my long journeys have brought about the fault ? I’ve even tried the suggested shell fuel + red ex but this hasn’t really helped so far . It’s all a bit strange that one light EML appeared after the first journey, then the next day another engine management light came on 🙈 .

Cheers
Peter

Hi, well the plot thickens 🙈 . Local garage cleared the light faults and suggested it could be Variable Valve issues ? But couldn’t be certain. So I contacted a local BMW specialist who suggested I wait for the fault/ lights to reappear so they could pinpoint the problem. Up until today the lights had stayed away , but on filling with fuel (Shell v power ) which was a suggestion on here , the lights came on immediately & this has now happened twice in my short ownership 🙈 could it really be the fuel? All a bit bizarre leaving me a massive head scratcher 😩 Again it appears to be running okay but I’m now back to square 1 with it all . HELP would be greatly appreciated 👍

This will start to get quite expensive, paying for other (professional?!) guesswork.

As was said at the beginning, get yourself a code reader. Then you can see which are stored first, then clear, then see what comes back. And you have arguable the best forum to get advice.
Many recommend Creator C310, I have an Autophix 7910. I am pretty sure they're similar.
