Eml. Engine symbol and limp mode???

Hi people,

As above this is the second time this has happened to me while driving, the first I admit I was driving with a bit of vigor :roll: The second was yesterday while driving down a dual carriageway, I was in 5th doing about 70mph. I put my foot down a bit to overtake a car in front (nothing to heavy) and while I was beside them I heared a bleep then the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and no power. I pulled back behind them put car in nutral, turned ignition off and back on and everything back to normal. This is the second time same thing has happened. Once ignition is turned off then back on all is ok.....strange that!! Any ideas???
 
I am sure someone else will confirm but I understand the ignition switch can play up and need replacing and to me it seems likely that is your problem.

Ignition switch doubtful for this. It normally stops the car from starting. This sounds more like an O2 sensor, although they usually stay on.

OP, do you use the same fuel all the time, and how old is your battery as this could be the problem.
 
I use normal 95 Ron fuel tbh normal from tesco but depends where I am when I need fuel. I've only had car 4 months but battery looks quite new, could get it tested to be sure I suppose. Never had any problems starting it, first turn of key
 
Get someone to read out the error codes stored in de computer, or buy some tools to do it yourself. Based on what you have writen above it could be almost anything.

Save yourself a ton of cash. Get an elm327 Bluetooth dongle for under a fiver and a copy of Torque Pro for your mobile for a few quid also.

Not wishing to upset anyone or face libel action, the first thing I would do is 'not use supermarket fuel'!
Secondly, and for no other reason apart from being 'anal' I would rather use the super-duper stuff than ordinary fuel.
It may make a difference you never know!

Not wishing to upset anyone or face libel action, the first thing I would do is 'not use supermarket fuel'!

There are 35 million cars in the UK and most are run on 95 RON without any problem. The M54 N52 engine is rated by BMW to run on 95 RON and despite what we would like to think there is nothing THAT special about the engine. I use premium because I'd like to think it's 'better' but using 95 ron isn't going to shut your car down and junk you in the fast lane!

The OP has another problem and needs to check for fault codes as a starter, anything else is guesswork.
 
I remember watching top gear do a comparison on standard 95 Ron and the super dupa hight octane stuff years ago and there was no difference between the 2 on the test car. plus my car has 85k on the clock. unless it's a new engine and always gonna be run on the stuff (not sure even then if you will see any difference) I doubt it will be any use on mine apart from the placebo effect!!!

I wasn't advocating the OP using 'Premium' fuel just advising, perhaps, he used 'non supermarket' based fuel just to see if it made any difference.

Cool, just advising, not advocating non-supermarket or premium fuel, whatever 8)

Either way fuel brand or RON isn't going to cure the problem described by the OP. Hopefully the code reader will give a starting point :thumbsup:
 
Right had my OBD2 dongle last week plugged her in "no fault codes found" bugger! :headbang: after dropping my daughter home tonight I gave the car a bit of gas in 4th down the dual and same again. EML and engine light on and limp mode. Pulled over and the car was reving eraticly between 1500-3000 rpm, turned ignition off and then back on all ok. Got home and plugged OBD back in and this is what it picked up......any ideas? ?

There are a lot of articles and threads on that code, it's unusual as it's indicating that sensors are providing implausible data. The bad news is that left untreated the problem often results in damaged Cat's. Common causes suggested included defective MAF, but I would personally start simple with a physical examination (for splits) of the air intake boot/MAF and electrical connections to the unit. Then a new good quality Maf per the result in Chris's link
