Hi all-not wanting to go on and on about this  -but what would you do if you could not trust your zed for fear of the light coming on?-It has a mind of its own it seems, I am totally peed off with forking out on diagnostics for it, its had a new manifold, two 02 sensors, software update, smoke test-and still it comes on!-don't know whether to just fork out for a new cat or full after market exhaust or to save the money and put towards an e89 in the future?-thoughts anyone please. :)

Didn,t know you had emission light problem,s Andy  you should have mentioned it earlier :D

Have a decat exhaust or if the car still run,s ok with light on then ignore it & save the cash for the E89

Andy, does it actually effect anything?

Also please tel me you give it a good thrashing one in a while, and I don't mean...

Would a decat pass the MOT?

No and err....no

Seriously Andy give the car a good drive keeping below 3k will do it no good and things like sensors will get clogged. These cars are meant to be driven :driving:

Andy, you've gone through logical elimination, when sensors or other parts of the system cause fuelling problems cat's can get damaged as a result. It's probably time for the replacement  An emissions light is an MOT fail. Removal of the Cat' is an MOT fail now (yes someone got one through, but it is) Time to shell out and get a nice car back to peak form and goes with the territory when running a quality car.

I and a few others have this problem also. From what I've gathered, some people just ignore it or others start to replace parts. It did worry me when I first saw my engine emissions warning lamp illuminate.
My suggestion is to buy an OBD reader for £20 approx, delete the fault code and see if the fault comes back. Mine did but periodically goes off and on. At the moment it is off, when the MOT is due, if it comes on I can delete it again.
No probs with the car whatsoever. This has happened before and after I got the engine terracleaned.
Hope that helps.

If only you'd mentioned before buddy. Wait a minute

So, just to get this right - has you emissions light ever come on? :)

Andy - stop worrying. If you want to sell, get a new cat. If you're happy to keep her, just let it be...

If BMW replaced each of the above in exchange for cash whilst chasing the emission light, I'd ask for a refund. Clearly they don't know what the problem is and they're allowing you to pay for their trial and error!

I agree 100%.

This is exactly the same with me and I get the same fault code P0420 every 3-4 months or so that Andy is worrying about. Usually occurs when I drive like Miss Daisy. :D The car get an excellent MOT emissions report, described as very clean by the garage tester, runs fine, doesn't miss a beat and returns over 40 miles to a gallon over a range of urban and rural driving. Like Andy, I have a D900 tester, and guess what the light disappears very quickly.

The emissions light, for whatever reason, seems to be a problem with the 2.0i model.

Frankly life is too short to worry about things like this.

I had this too, it's gone and hasn't been back; can't even remember what the garage said, think it was something about a momentary timing issue.

it is a pain, after all what's the point of the f*cking light if nothing can be deciphered from it?!

I hear what you are saying-its just the last thing the stealer said to me last time they had the zed was-"We could fit a new cat and the light still come on!" :headbang:

I do have one, so you are saying that terracleaning did no good?
