Andy take it up near the red line before changing once in a while. The engine is limited at the red line so you cant do any damage and the car will thank you for it.

As sars said make sure it's warm. I would drive another 5-10 miles even after the temp gauge is up to allow the oil also to get to the correct temperature.

It's a sports car and needs to be driven like one once in a while :wink:
 
Would the emission light go out by itself if i drove it hard,and it happened to clean the sensors?(if that is the problem)
 
It might do. Get some cleaner in a full tank then go hoon it away Andy :evil:

My emission light came on a few months back,my mate who is a car mechanic reset it.I thought I was going to be spending some serious dollar for the M.o.t the following month but it passed with flying colours.
My light has come on again 3 days ago,i'll get my mate to reset it again.
He told me the first time it happened to 'give it some boot' to give it a good clear out!
Sounds like I wasn't giving it enough boot when commuting about this time again.
My Z is a 2.0i SE,so when I get the light reset i'm going to make her squeal a bit more often ! :evil: :driving:

Like i say tho mine has gone 2000 miless without coming on -i thought it had settled down-must of been slowly getting choked up(fingers crossed thats all it is) :cry:
 
Mine has only gone about 1000-1500 miles.My mate thought it could be the cat,but my 2006 Z had only done 19,000 miles from new. I got him to take it for a mot 4 weeks before it expired just in case I had to hunt around for a cat,but it passed the mot.
Stratstone Derby BMW have done a ' health check ' since on my car to ' try and get some more money out of me if they found any faults',which they didn't, when I took it in for heater/rear screen not working after I took the battery off to charge because it was flat.
After 10-15 mins with no power supply and your Air Con /heater fan and rear screen heater needs a reset that ONLY bmw can fix. I tried a couple of indys and they couldn't fix it.

i inherited the very same fault . luckily my indy fettled it but a timely reminder as the cold months approach to keep the battery tiptop http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=42989
mine is hooked up right now :thumbsup:
 
One indy ordered a part from BMW Germany thinking it might be the unit itself but it still wouldn't work.They replaced my unit and didn't charge me anything.I have a new Bosch battery on now so I should be ok for a while :thumbsup:

I know i shouldnt presume,but i am- i am assuming its the dreaded 29F4 code again-same one i keep getting apparantly :roll:

Can you recommend a OBD2 code reader or will any OBD2 code reader do the job?

BMW should supply these things as standard at the side of the battery for the amount of times you have to use one! :headbang:

Loads on eBay, Buy it Now price as little as £21.99 including postage for Autotop D900 Canscan reader. Very easy to use.
 
Out of interest Andy, what indy are you using? I tend to use Beverley Motor Works (BMW - do you see what they did there) and they sorted a very similar problem on my old Mini JCW. May be worth trying before going to the stealers: http://beverleymotorworks.co.uk/
