Emission Control Pump

I need your advise.
It is some time now that I had a yellow engine check light.
The shop's computer gives a problem to the emission control pump (unsufficient air volume) which is definetely not correct as the pump with the related valve have been changed twice, but after a month or so the light comes up again.
Today again the same issue.
I understand that this signal for the engine check light comes from a sensor. Might this be the problem? Do you know which sensor is?
Or any other ideas?

Thanks for any advise

Edit: The car is a 2lt Z4 model 2005 and the emissions are checked OK

If this is the same as the secondary air pump, then I've had the issue twice. Make sure that the relay that controls it has not shorted. Also, make sure that the check valve attached to it is operating properly. first time that I replaced mine, the relay was fused closed and the pump was dead from running all the time, and the check valve had actually failed.

Yal thanks, I have checked all above during every change made.

UPDATE:
Problem hopefully solved.

Reason/solution: On the back right side of the engine, there is a screw (tap) which is removed when you want to clean the passage that the air from the secondary air pump is going into. So not enough air volume to the oxyzen sensor, as air was getting out throught this open.
This was forgotten to be installed and that is why the ''unsufficient air volume'' was appearing during the tests.

I will wait though for a couple of months, before being sure about it, as the engine check light was coming up a month or so, after the previous changes of the air pump.

Just in case I have to change the relay, can someone please tell me where the relay is located? I know it's supposed to be salmon red but I can't find any relays next to the fuse box. Do you have to remove the panels around the fuse box?

Thanks,
Ghianut

Re: Secondary Air injection relays: I have two relays on the firewall behind the fuse box. It has been posted that one of these is for the Secondary Air Injection Pump which has been posted as being salmon red. Both of my relays behind the fuse box are purple Part No. 6136 1 388 911. The relay for the the air pump is 12 63 1 742 690. Is this a new designation for this relay or should one of these purple one relays be salmon red instead?

Still fighting the Secondary Air Injection Pump error code P0411 after 3 pumps. The error code comes up but the pump still works.

Thanks,

Ghianut

I have the same issue only I get code P1413 I've bought a replacement salmon red relay but can you tell me how to get behind the fuse panel to fit it? I can take off the glove box etc but don't know how to get behind to swap the relay.

Cheers

I found the relay location for the secondary air injection pump. The relay is located up behind the fuse box behind the glove box. Yyou have to remove the lower panel behind the fuse box and use a light and mirror to see the relay above a blue electrical connector. It is difficult to access, remove and replace. The two BMW parts houses I contacted didn't know where it was and the BMW dealer didn't know where it was. You can imagine how much they would charge while they looked for it and then replaced it. The relay is part number 12 63 1 742 690 salmon red.http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/posting.php?mode=reply&f=3&t=5118&sid=d9acd7c8829f979fd653d5d4933381c4#

Cheers Ghianut1 I attempted the relay replacement last weekend and used the same process :) replaced relay but I still have a pump that only works every other cold start so its going to the garage next week.

Thanks for the help

Dogmatic6 Sir: Please don't keep us in suspense and do tell us what the indy shop said about your PO411/413 problem!! It will be interesting to find out what the diabolical Herr Doktor Engineers have designed into these totally amazing vehicles.

Thanks, ghianut1

Hi ghianut1

The indy could not find the cause of the problem! the relay is good and the pump works most of the time. They think there is a loose connection in the fuse box and recommended I get an electrician to check!! I've not done anything more about it yet.

Cheers

Dogmatic6, My pump runs every time I start the car but sounds really sick like there is so much back pressure that the pump cannot force anymore air into the valve. I have replaced the valve and checked it since and it does work. The "Check Engine Light" still comes on sometimes. I disconnected the hose at the pump and shifted the hose so that only some of the air goes down the hose to the valve. The engine runs fine, the "Check Engine Light" does not come on and the pump doesn't strain to pump air into the engine. Not a solution, but a start.

I'll keep working on a total solution.

Cheers,

Dogmatic 6 According to the blog.bavauto.com the real problem with this P0411 is low air flow. If the secondary air injection pump is working and the valve is working then probably the ports in the head are clogged up. I haven't seen a really good method of cleaning them. Bavarian Auto suggests that maybe some sort of liquid cleaner that they sell might clean the after removing the manifold and attaching some sort of funneling attachment to allow the cleaner the flow down to the ports may work or use a flexible wire or rod to run through the ports(?). I like Bill Cosby's old fashioned method. Run it up to 100 in second gear and, "blow the gunk out". Don't know if that will work but sounds like more fun and a lot easier. If you haven't heard Bill Cosby's "200 mph" it's a must listen to!

My Zed sits in the garage most of the winter so I haven't tried this yet.

Good luck!

Hi ghianut,

Thanks for the information! I've still not done anything about my problem yet. I checked this morning and the pump wasn't running. My emissions light is on most of the time now but does go off randomly. Its still coming up with code P1413 which is 'Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay Control Circuit Signal Low'

Cheers

Secondary Air Injection Fault Code P0411.

Dogmatic 6 According to Konas who posted on here some time ago there is a screw on the back right side of the engine which allows clean out of the exhaust ports. I haven't found it yet but that is my next "solution' to this problem. He also says the indication is low air flow which you would have if this screw is loose or missing altogether.

I have asked for the location of this screw but he has not responded yet. I looked on the rear of my engine but could not find anything that looked like it might be a screw or a screw hole. Next I will remove the heat shield in the right rear corner of the engine compartment and look from there. Seems to me that it certainly has to be on the head but not a very accessible area.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Cheers,

ghianut

Dogmatic6 et al, Konas has a different engine, not an M54, so the location is different or doesn't exist for the screw hole to control the air flow or to clean out the ports. Oh well.

Back to square one

Dogmatic6 et al: Konas has a different engine, not an M 54 so the screw hole may or may not be in the same location. Have not found any kind of hole, port, screw hole on the head. Still searching

Dogamtic 6 et al my indy shop finally diagnosed the problem with the secondary air injection pump. The pump puts out about 1/2 PSI but the valve requires about 1 PSI to open. When external air is introduced it shows up on the O2 sensor. Without the external air the air pump never opens the valve and the O2 sensor never changes. This was tested on two air pumps, one from myeuroparts and the other from bmwpartsonly. Could it be that Hella/Pierburg, the manufacturer, is selling second class pumps to the grey market? I noticed that both air pumps have a ground off or filed off area on top where the serial number might have been.
