Ellipsoids or Split Rims?

Quick question, is there a difference between the Ellipsoids and the Split Rims in 18" form? When I say difference I'm referring to the weight of the wheel and whether this will have any significant bearing on the handling?

Think I still prefer the look of the Ellipsoids either way!
 
Go for what you like - there's not enough difference in weight to make any discernible difference anyway.

Splits are bad news for maintenance, but most people seem to prefer the more sporty look.

Ellipsoids are a lot less hassle and if you prefer them anyway its a no-brainer.
 
If the splits looked perfect I'd probably prefer them, but knowing what they're like for rotting I'm not keen to leave myself open to refurb problems!

On a side note, do you have to run different tyre sizes front to rear on the Ellipsoids? The price difference front to rear is shocking!

Exactly the same stagger as the splits
 
Ellipsoids are heavier but on a car the Z4 won't really matter. They are also the best looking wheel ever fitted to a Z4 :thumbsup:
 
personally i think the ellipsoids look much better, it was a prerequisite for me.

I seen a black e89 yesterday with (i think) 17" split style rims, and it made me think damn the ellipsoids look soo good, they really give the car that perfect finish

I personally think the 107 ellipsoids are probably the best OEM wheel for a non-m E85 pre-facelift Z4. :wink: The 108 splits are lovely when they're in good order, but the corrosion problem always seems to be an issue. The 107's aren't immune to corrosion, mine are a bit of a mess behind the spokes, but I bought the car knowing the wheels needed refurbing (which will be cheaper to do than if I had 108s).

I don't know if there is any difference in weight/handling, if there was I imagine it'd be pretty imperceptible to most drivers, but the sizes are the same between the 107s and 108s (staggered fitment - fronts are the same, and the rears are the same).

Malc - cleaning those 135s would make me invent a whole new set of swearwords! It'd take longer to clean them than the car as a whole! :D

I actually quite like the M Sport wheels (regardless of the cleaning issues) but I'm not sure how good they'd look on a pre-facelift, anyone got any pics? :D

Mate - I've got a Z4 and an e60 which both sport those suckers - if you ever want extra therapy and a trip down to Leeds give me a shout!

Blue - I'd go elipsoid too, but I've never been a fan of the 108's. Can't see why the MV2's would look odd on a pre-facelift. If you do go elipsoids - maybe we can swap when we both fancy a change next summer!
 
Actually I've just seen a photo of them fitted to a Roadster and I'm not sure I like them enough to invest in a set!

Ellipsoids it is when I scrape together the cash, I was looking at a set that a forum member has on Ebay but by the time I add the cost of four tyres plus a spare wheel I'd be over-budget. :(
 
I spotted those, I'm waiting to see the pics but they're at the top of my budget as it is so will depend on whether the tyres are any good!

The ones on Ebay have a cracked rear wheel and I'm not comfortable having it welded so really need a single alloy from another source which is what pushes them over budget. I've read too much debate over the safety aspects of having a cracked rim welded and quite honestly the idea of it failing at high speed doesn't fill me with glee!

My 202's take me long enough to clean and they're a faily open design!
 
I dont' think the MV2's (135) suit the Z4, had them on my E46 M Sport coupe which looked right but to many spokes for the Z4 IMO
