Autoexpresss road test mentioned it is fitted on 4-cylinder engine with twin-turbo to compensate the loss of sound from 6-cylinder engine.

Don't think this will be all bad, least it will still sound like a BMW.

A lot of te electric cars have these fitted too... Except to make them still sound like cars.

Urg, a sound generator? Is this inline with the exhaust to make a real engine/exhaust sound from the exhaust, or does it feed into a speaker in the cabin? I loved the sound in my old e85, but only I ever heard it as it was input to the cabin! In my e89, when hitting a tunnel etc, the 'real' exhaust sound is loud and agressive, which is what I wanted...

BMW has included an electronic sound generator, which augments the bass and baritone at idle and in the sweet spot between 2,500-3,500rpm.

I don't like the idea of this, fair enough it will sound better to people who dont understand what is happening but if it was mine I would know its pretend. Surely they could have done something with the exhaust to make it sound better?

It reminds me of a mate who had a fake dump valve noise generator on his fiat punto, it was actually cool at first but when I think back... :|

The old z4 3.0 had a sound gen, its a bit of pipe that sends the sound into the cabin, footwell if I recall. the 2.5 and below did not have it.

Indeed it has and if you remove one of the bits of foam it sounds even better - well documented elsehwere within these marvellous pages.

I love the way you say "the old z4 3.0" - I still think of mine as a relatively modern car!!! Think i used to refer to my old Man's Spitfire (Triumph not Supermarine) in a similar way!

Lol I did not mean to sound disrespectfull and yes my last one was only 3 years old when I traded it in, and agree is still a very modern car. but well I must be carefull, I recall and will say it is the previous shape and previous engine, and it was my previuos car. I still also think the mk6 celica is a modern car as well.

We must start to call it mk2 with the previous Z4 as Mk1.

Yes I remember that a few were requested via magazene about the sound gen, some one wanted to make it but its was 2006

Does anyone know where BMW put the electronic sound generator on the N20 powered Z4s? I looked through the ETK and couldn't find it.

Or if it is even there? I've only seen it mentioned on a few early N20 web reviews.

I read somewhere they now use the cars audio system but I could be wrong.

Always thought it was a bit rum having a fake sound, it's a sportscar, make it sound like one!
