Electronic Parking Brake issue?

Are there any known issues with these on the Z4 or other BMWs?

My wife reversed her car on the drive last night as she does every day around 6PM. There is a shallow slope on our drive towards the house.

At around 7PM I put our rubbish out and the car was in the same place. However, this morning when we got up, the car had rolled backward into our house a few feet and hit a wall, which has damaged the rear bumper :-(

My wife is convinced she put the EPB on as she does every night, but it was not on this morning when getting into the car. She doesn't usually leave her car in gear as I do.

I have searched without any luck, but am wondering if there is any known issue possibility of these electronic parking brakes failing or releasing accidentally?

Bad news... but I read quite a lot of forums and I've not heard of any EPB issues. As they're worm/motor/servo operated, they have to be electrically operated to release the brakes, they can't just pop off. So, either the brake wasn't applied, or the car has released itself?!

+1 Manaic.

Hope you get it sorted. I have a fairly steep drive and have never had a problem with the car moving in either direction.

Only issue I have is my OCD kicking in and me going back to the car every time I park up to see if I actually put it on as I mostly dont remember doing it

Mine did fail on my previous E89 in that it was working when I got in car to come home from work but then refused to work work when I got home and when i restarted car the warning light came on , dealer had to reinstall software

Always roll the wheels of my cars onto a paving slab to prevent them rolling towards the house. Simple, if inelegant, solution and negates the use of a hand brake or leaving it in gear.

Thanks for the comments. It seems there are no known issues then.

It has seemed ok since, so may just be down to error, but the wife insists otherwise!

It does seem strange though, as I have tried taking the parking brake off on the drive and the car rolls immediately. I don't know how it managed to remain stationary for several hours and then roll on it's own accord :?

hi was wandering if any one has had a hand brake warning light stay on all the time not in red but orange . this happened to me ,had to go to dealer to get update on software, this i find hard to understand ? and even more so when i was charged for it . it does seem to be ok now but early days

Always always when on a hill or slope leave the car in gear..... Just to be on the safe side. Once you get into the habit of doing that you never look back....

Yepp good advice, had it drummed into me when learning to drive, only time I don't is when dropping the car off for a service as invariably they won't check its in gear :|
