Electronic Parking Brake Failure

Is there a common denominator with all these e-brake problems?
Like have all the cars recently been to BMW for a service before the problems started?
Or have they all hit a similar mileage?

No recent service, at around 67k miles.
I'm using it a bit less often now, which may or may not be relevant, but that actually began back in June or so

Well - 1 week in the garage, 2 new actuators and 1 new EMF control unit later it is (fingers crossed!) fixed ...

Thankfully all covered under the warranty from the garage or it would have been an expensive failure !!!

I had a recall completed in November........ In Jan I had the low battery / excessive discharge message as the car hadn't been used very much over christmas, 2 hours later the PARKING brake failed (fortunately in the off position so I could still drive the car).

Local Indie, checked the mechanics, diagnostics etc but said it was software related and he couldn't fix it. So had to go to BMW to get it 'recoded'/reset for a hefty charge........

Dealership claim they contacted BMW, BMW claim the dealer didn't make contact. Shocking service and attitude all round....... no mechanical fault, no electrical fault, just a low battery level leading to software needing to be reset.

I'm in discussions with BMW - I'm talking they're not listening or playing ball :x

Looks like we are now the latest victim of this problem.
Washed the car today and swapped the wheels. Later when we went to move it back into the garage the e-brake would not work and the warning is on the dash.
The low battery situation that everybody else mentions seems to be the common denominator as ours gave us a low battery warning last week. How this manages to screw up the handbrake is anybodys guess.
I agree with what has already been said and there should have been a recall on this as its a safety issue.
Oh well, need to wait until Monday and get it booked in to the indy for a new battery and hope they can sort the software too.

I’m still waiting for Carly to incorporate the ebrake functions into the app, not sure if even that’s going to be the answer as it’s capable of recalibrating the system but not actually re writing the software?

Checked the battery last night. 11.9v.
After a full charge its reading 12.3v.
Its obviously on its way out but would probably survive quite a while before giving up.
It just shows that this fault can appear with just a small drop in battery power.
The car battery has never been dead either.

Sorted.
New battery and software update.

Does the software become corrupt or is there and updated version ?

I was hoping to get a good answer to this but all I was told was something like the software shows the ebrake as a simple open or closed circuit and the low battery interferes with this. The software update fixes it.
Still doesnt make sense to me.

Sounds to me like “Yes sir, that’s a definite maybe“!
A simple “I dont know” would impress me more I’m afraid - I had enough BS in my working life to last me till I knock my elbows on the side of my casket!

It sounds though that this could happen to any E model as they will all have the same software in the car from the factory.
Although it would have been wise for BMW to make sure the updated software was in newer cars as soon as they knew there was a problem.

It would be nice to think the updated software was added to cars in for servicing, doesn’t look like it while they can get away with charging extra when the issue arises-poor show from Bmw

Happened to me this week.

Going to a dealer for an update. This thread today helped as they started with

"We need a comprehensive check on the whole car before we can say what it can be" £££££ talked them through what I know and this thread they have agreed to update for cheap next week.

So with all the ebrake problems being fixed by software updates, has anyone gone to trading standards for advice.
The brake system especially as the ebrake is also the emergency brake is a safety critical item, no different to faulty steering or air bags by design.
If software could wear out i can understand it requiring cash to fix, but safety critical should be subject to call back or at least a free fix when that problem arises. By paying we/you are admitting that it's not BMW's fault by design.
Look at all the VW that have been returned due to some dodgy software.

Funny that one of my customers last year was telling me how he got the push from VW Germany over that scandal, he now works for JLR!

I see you have a 2010 model, mine 2009 23i.
In 2013 six months after purchase my car was called back for software security update, foc.
Touch wood never had problems with ebrake.
Did many others out there get that call back.

Funnily enough we bought ours in August 2013. I wonder if the previous owner had a call and either didnt bother getting it done or had already sold it.

I’m wondering if the ebrake software was changed along the production run by bmw, what’s the age of the newest e89 that’s had this issue?
