Electronic Parking Brake Failure

Hi, did you get any resolve on this with BMW and an explanation. I've been out in the car 4 times today. Within 5 mins of parking up at Morrisons and coming back to the car I got the yellow P and parking brake fail.

Fab! I'll go to my mates garage first to use his diagnostics machine and go from there

I used to think that the old fashioned lever with a button on the top was a bit "ox cart" but I'm starting to change my views !

Funny, I'm thinking the same. I've had a handbrake failure in the Range Rover, also electronic (possibly the same in the disco?) but I have been able to rectify that issue as it is still mechanical and usually sticking shoes.

Now it's going to be the inconvenience of getting it to the garage and getting the time to do that, really not possible with 10 hour days and the garage being at least 45 mins on a good day. Luckily I park on a flat surface, so I'll not be taking my car to my parents until it's fixed as their driveway slopes.

Re the above:-
Handbrake release procedure - Disco:-
1Turn off engine and Select P
2 Apply foot brake and hold EPB down
3 Turn ignition on and wait for the OK "ping"
4 Start the engine and then release the EPB
5 I The parking brake should have released

A JLR employee told me that BMW nicked the electronic brake system from them.
So there might be similarities to Disco.

Given the multitude of parts they share I'm not surprised.

Funnily enough when I got home which didn't take long I did try the same procedures that you would use on the Disco and RR to reset but it didn't work.

To be honest the issue with the JLR system is usually not it engaging and then randomly disengaging itself so it no longer works, it's usually the fact it sticks on!

Boys on the LR forums all say use it or loose it, I always put my handbrake on, even in traffic it's into N and handbrake on. Now I have to sit with my foot on the brake, my biggest bug bare!

Righty,

Well I've done a diagnostics scan on the car and I get error code 6017 which is the wheel speed sensor DFA_EMF in the parking brake module.

Turns out that a drop in voltage I.e. Your battery charge is low can throw this up. So if you've a new car and leave it parked up for 3 weeks you might get the same issue.

Basically the only way to cure this is to complete a full softwear update to the vehicle including CAS per diag code D3440_EMF0000T_90_200. After programing fault codes should be cleared and road tested performed.

So I suspect that's what happened to be OP in this one. It's a joke really that it can throw an error that can only be resolved via a softwear update. Now to get it booked in.

Is the handbrake problem sorted now ?

Not yet, I've not had time to get to the garage. Issue with working 10 hours a day plus and they want it all day incase it doesn't work first time. Hopefully on Monday it will be sorted. According to the dealer they've had several Z4s with this wheel sensor issue on all ages of E89s.

Should just confirm that issue as stated was resolved by the software update. Garage confirmed they've had 7 Z4s with this issue. I was the first to self diagnose and ask for this update independently.

Just remember not to have a USB plugged into the glove box when they are trying to update or it won't allow it.

Wow, the timing is interesting...those 7 that your dealer worked on were all this year? My parking light went amber in August. So including Angie and Mouse that's at least 10 of us with the same fault!...i smell a recall! :fuelfire:

My dealer hasn't had 7 this year but had 7 over the years. It's caused by a very low battery which causes an issue with the sensor at the wheels which needs to be updated.

Still don't agree that a software update is a chargeable to the user/owner.

And seen as so little has been reported it's not justifiable as a 'recall'. Granted a recall is something that is done when the failure could lead to injury etc but as its software there is no guarantees that it won't happen again. It's not like a falling physical component which can be modified and replaced.

I've now got the 'bong of dread' every time I open the door. The handbrake light is on and the car is telling me that there is a handbrake fault. As far as I can tell the handbrake is working fine. Helpfully the car also told me dynamic emergency braking is still functioning! :)
I think the battery is the original 2009 item so it might be getting near needing replacing. Car starts fine but I wonder if its worth replacing the battery at the same time as getting car's software updated.
Looks like a trip to the dealer is needed

Probably. Is it a DD or a weekend toy? If the latter do you leave auto lights and wipers set? If so, stop doing so as this drains the battery quicker. With mines the handbrake wasn't engaged. No light, pulling the switch did nothing. It held itself on a tiny slope but anything bigger and it didn't like it really. You can get a new battery elsewhere otherwise you are looking north of £250 I think from BMW plus £125 for the software update to update the software. It's farcical really!

Handbrake seems to engage and disengage fine, red light goes on and off. I can hear the mechanism working. Guess Ill see what dealer says.

I took the car into an Indy in Liverpool and they updated codes. Checked battery and said it's ok. Hopefully it's sorted now.

Just had my 59 plate 2.5i diagnosed with the same fault after its MOT fail, £96 for that and a cheeky another £96 both plus VAT I'm going to have to pay for the re-programme (not happy about it) but have no choice to get it thru MOT. OK for the diagnostic check fee but if it's a BMW software fault why am I paying it? Can I do it myself in the future thru the USB port does anyone know?

I think you would need the programme to 're-install it, it's not just a case of clearing the codes. The Indy checked my battery and said it was still ok but maybe was a little flat when fault happened. But I had just finished a long run up to Northumberland so I don't think the battery had anything to do with the fault. The parking brake was working fine even though the car was saying it wasn't.
So far I've not heard of it recurring after its been reprogrammed but as the cars get older maybe it will happen to someone.

Just had an issue which sounds very similar to this, will check the codes tomorrow and see what comes up. By the sounds of it the only 'solution' is to pay for this software update

My colleagues car has suffered this failure today. Taken off the drive, sloping, then when she come to re-park it and apply the handbrake nothing. So left it in gear.

I can see this car being parked in a quiet country lane and torched soon, better still leave it on a slope near a cliff!

She turned down an offer by a friendly scrapper to have it crushed last year.

Nicking anything from JLR doesn't look like a good starting point, seeing as S-Type Jaguars have loads of problems with this electronicity.

Another reason I wouldn't ever want any E89.
