Electronic Parking Brake Failure

Hi All,

I've recently purchased a used 2011 BMW Z4 and I'm now experiencing some issues with the EPB. After some research I was pushed in the direction of a possible software bug being the cause. However, after getting the faults read I'm now inclined to believe there is another cause.

The error codes are as follows:
  • Left parking brake control motor power supply - Short Circuit to plus
  • Switch lighting - Short circuit to plus

I've done some more research and can't seem to find a single thread of a Z4 with the left parking brake control motor failure. I'm obviously worried about taking the car to a main stealer and having my wallet rinsed, but also conscious that using an indy auto-electrician could end up costing me more in the long run if they can't find the fault.

Is there anyone who has had any experience with this issue and can share their two cents?

Cheers,
George

Hi George

I haven’t personally had this issue, but it does seem that a battery that is getting to the end of its life is quite a common cause for parking brake failure.

Quite often a new battery and software update resolved the issue, but obviously there is no guarantee until you have had the faults confirmed.

How old is the battery that is currently fitted to the car? If it is in excess of 5 years old, I would consider swapping it out for a new one.

Cheers

Paul
