electronic oil gauge

I did the engine oil, oil filter.
I put back 4.5 liter and I'm at the maximum on the screen.
I thought we should add more but no?
anyone know how the gauge is graduated?
Does it give graduations between the maximum and the minimum?

No graduations, often after a service it will show full then settles to a lower figure later..min to max is 1 litre but it’s not linear..

When my N52 shows 1/2 between min and max I add 1/2 liter (qt) and it's back to max or very close.
This is where I keep it all the time. 8)

Correct! :D

very strange, today I was able to take a walk.
the oil level has dropped since the oil change while it has not been running.
I put back 250ml but the gauge still indicates the same thing ???
there is no leak below !!
Does anyone have an explanation to this?

Assuming it’s the same as my engine the manual says:

Checking engine oil level
Your car is equipped with an electronic oil level monitor.
For a precise measurement and display of the oil level, it is necessary that the engine be at operating temperature, i.e. after uninterrupted driving for at least 10 km or 6.5 miles. You can have the oil level displayed while you are driv- ing, or while the vehicle is at a standstill on a level surface and the engine is running.

thank you
that explains why I had the maximum after having drained with only 4.5 liters ...
I will see the next time I ride with it

If my last 3.0Si or current 330i are anything to go by it can take a long time to register a top up, so if it sill looks lowish don't just add some straight away.

I've topped both of them up and driven over 30 miles with the level still showing what it was before I added the oil!

Both did finally show the revised level on my return trip.

Don't care about the maximimum.
A recommendation is, to add not more than 1/2 liter, when you get the minimum warning. Never ever fill in above max, as this can kill your motor.

I changed my oil and coolant yesterday. After i drained the oil, i poured the waste into a 5 litre bottle expecting to have to add a drop into another container. But no it all fitted with ease in the 5 litre bottle. Even though gauge read full when last checked some weeks ago.
On refill, it took the required 6 litres to bring it up to the max level. 23i, N52 engine.
The filter didn't hold much oil when removed, perhaps less than 1/8 litre if that.
