Electronic handbrake E89

Can anyone out there help? I have a Z4 E89 2.5. The handbrake warning light remains on and the electronic handbrake wont work. It's ok to drive and it works as an emergency brake but that's it. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you
 
Its a common fault and ultimately needs a software update to fix it either by a main dealer or an indy.
It seems to be brought on by a low battery.
 
Thank you. Is it possible for someone other than main dealer to rectify this problem. When you say Indy I assume you mean an independent garage. Thanks again
 
Yep, independent garage as long as they are able to do software updates on BMWs
Just tell the garage what you need before booking it in and check they can do updates and know what you are talking about.
